Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

Columbus 2.0 shared by me. Cloudy reddish brown pour with an off white head. Had some yeastiness and fruitiness. Pretty good but seemed pretty sweet for a belgian.

Poured a hazy, dark amber color with a medium sized, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of banana and clove, light spiciness, some caramel malts, with nuts. Taste was sweet, with caramel malts and brown sugar, some nuts, citrus, yeast and dried fruits. A touch of alcohol in the finish.

Bottle - corked and caged. This was a pricey SOB ringing up at $18! Pours a murky copper. Rapidly vanishing tan head. Nose is green apple skins, light spice, light yeast, and some flowers. Taste is more green apple surrounded by spices, candied fruits (maybe candied apples), dried malts, caramel, bigger yeast notes, flowers, and some earthiness. Body is light-medium with relaxed carbonation notes. In spots, it feels almost like it flat. Ends with big spices and yeast, green fruits (especially apple), spices, brown sugar and flowers.

Spicet fruity, carmel aroma, small head for a Belgian type brew, taste was tangy fruit carmel raisin and a sugary sweetness, the little hop I thought I detected in the aroma, was nowhere to be found in taste, just a smooth sweet finish, tastey enough, but somehow not as complex as all those flavors would lead you to believe

Pour was amber, tight off white head. Nose caramel followed by yeast. Taste had a much fuller body than I thought, there was carmelization from the burnt-toasted malts. The alcohol was a great compliment, not right up front. Nice.

750. Big dark brown cloudy body under a nice thick moussy tan head that doesn’t stick around. Sweet malt and caramel on the nose, but not much going on--is this too soon out of the chill? Deep, layered, chewy body with moderate carb. Nice thick sweet layers of toffee and caramel, well-hidden booze, but not a heck of a lot going on. Sweet, easy-drinking, non-cloying, non-syrupy, but kind of a food beer, which is odd given the occasion, (probably) the effort, and the abv. Nice but not amazing.

750 ml bottle shared with several Quebecois and one other drunk American at tiggmtl’s going away party in Montreal, from a New Belgium glass. A medium chestnut-mahogany body, faintly yeasty and transparent, shows a faint touch of lasting foam.....the nose exhibits strikingly powerful hoppy notes to start along with caramel, molasses and cracked pepper, pretty intense until a light vegetal dullness settles in to break up the joy.....but redemption occurs on the tongue, the light alcohol notes perfectly complimenting the burnt sugars, anise and raisins, a rich fruitcake-like character that ends in a rather burnt, harsh note, effectively keeping the sweetness and thickness from cloying....very full, moderately carbonated. At the moment, not one of my favorites from Allagash though I’ll certainly give it another go....
