Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

750 from Immy - thanks! Been sitting on this one for nearly a year (and hey, isn’t it time for the 12th?). On the one hand, it’s "just another" bottle conditioned Allagash brew. But that’s an awesome thing as usual. I’m glad I had a fresh bottle of this to compare. With some age, the carbonation is very minimal - almost too thin in the body on some level - but the flavors are really robust, with some plum, prune, and very smooth malts. Almost rich enough to be a grand cru, this is another winner from the great Maine brewery.

Pours with a two-finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Almost cloudy amber color. Medium bodied and good carbonation. Nose is raisins. Flavor sweet raisins, malt and some alcohol. Slight alcohol aftertaste. Totally different from their 10th anniversary ale. Expensive at $16.00 for a 750ml bottle from Tully’s Beer and Wine Wells, ME.

Sweet and sour, this pours light red but cloudy, and no apparent head. Visually not all that great. The flavors are citrus, and maybe some pear and dried fruit. Not bitter at all. Interesting, but perhaps the flavors would improve had I aged it more.

Bottle. Pours deep copper color with a large sustainable beige colored head. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits, yeast, candi sugar. FLavor is more dark dried fruits, brown sugar, dough, caramel, raisin. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finishes sweet with a nice kick of alcohol warmth. A very fine brew indeed.

Bottle mail ordered from Vintage Cellars. Hazy brown with creamy off-white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, some over-ripe fruit notes, and yeast. Bright palate. Malty taste with over-ripe fruit notes, dark fruit tastes, brown sugar, and an alcoholic finish.

750 ml. corked & caged Belgian bottle. No freshness date seen. Loud pop releases cork. Poured out a deep orange color, with a sticky tan colored head. Aromas are of spiced apples, candy, caramel. Flavors are of candied apples, citrus, caramel. Decent body, soft yet persistant carbonation. Thick, rich body overall. Best beer from Allagash in years. Too bad it’s a "one of."

750 ml bottle: This one pours a slightly hazy, ruby tinged amber color. It has a large tan head that settles down fairly quickly. The nose is interesting. The first thing that I notice is a somewhat champagne-like aroma. Then I notice from the description of the beer that they use champagne yeast. That explains that, anyway. I also get some fruits and yeastiness also. Interesting taste. One of the first things that I noticed is a dryness to it. Not like some other beers, but like a dry champagne. There is also a light carbonation on the tongue. A nice mix of caramel and fruit flavors. The fruits are evident, but subtle, with none of them really jumping out to the forefront. This was quite nice.
