Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

25 oz bottle, Stateline Liquors. Pours a clear dark amber to copper body with a rusty tinge under a creamy foamy beige head with lots of retention. Aroma is very Allagash like for lack of better words. Rich fruits with heavy yeast influence, heavy sweet malt, and some light alcohol. The flavor is heavily malty, very fruity, with a hefty alcohol finish. Finishes with a dry cellar funkiness. Heavy on the raisins and dates. Mouthfeel is quite good for an Allagash beer, only moderate fizzy carbonation with a slightly sticky finish. This one seems pretty well attenuated for an Allagash beer too, maybe due to the little bit of age that this has on it. Overall, this was not totally unique for an Allagash beer. Always pretty good, but never something that throws me for a loop.

Huge malty aroma, with hints of spicy hops. Pours amber/brown. Huge malt flavor, reminds me of a barley wine with a belgian twist, very smooth, some hints of fruits like apples.

Tap @ Publick House, Brookline, MA. Pours a deep, orange-red with a slightly lacy off-white head. Aroma is dough, with slight malt, nutmeg, and apple characteristics. Taste is very doughy, but I detected some red licorice, apple, malt, and nutmeg as well. The champagne yeast adds an incredible effervescence and liveliness to the beer that makes you always want to come back for more. I absolutely love this beer, a unique offering with a great flavor.

The Dan Journal #64. Tasted 1/9/2007. 750ml bottle. Hazy with a amber brown hue. White head. Grainy caramel nose. Sweet grainy malty wheaty body. Nice and smooth with a mellow burn. Smooth malt flavor. Easy. Moderate effervescence. Nice tang.

(750 ml bottle) Body is hazy, dark amber with a diminishing off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt, over-ripe fruit (strawberries, orange, lemon, raisins), and underlying alcohol nose. Full-bodied and oily mouthfeel that gives a very odd sensation of the beer sliding around the mouth on its own while a little carbonation awakens. Flavor is sweet with fruit and malt along with some spice. The finish is incredibly balanced between the sweetness and alcohol as well as the pleasant mouthfeel. On a second tasting, I noticed some tartness that I did not before.

rusty copper color, golden at edges. thin creamy light tan head, good retention. aroma is juicy orange peel in rum, sweet toffee malt, and other citrusy rinds with a little pulp, as if carved off the fruit with a paring knife. flavor is sweet bready, doughy malt, a bit of cointreau, and more orange peel. very light rummy alcohol that’s actually mellow in the finish/aftertaste. the allagash crew has got the BSA down pretty good, and this is not as boozy as their others I’ve had.
