Commercial Description:
To acknowledge this year’s anniversary, our 11th, Allagash’s brewers decided to use a champagne yeast for both the primary and secondary fermentations. This beer was brewed with both Cascade and Northern Brewer hops and copious amounts of Belgian Aromatic Malt to achieve its vibrant garnet color and unique, malty palate. At a hefty 9% ABV, the alcohol in this brew is balanced by a light sweetness, a full-bodied mouth feel and a gentle, lingering hop character. Just prior to bottling, when there is no carbonation present in the beer, a fresh dose of sugar and yeast is added. After bottling, the beer is aged in our temperature-controlled cellar, where the yeast ferments the sugar and naturally carbonates the beer. This process, known as méthode champenoise, is the same traditional process we use for all of our bottled beers. The batch of 11th Anniversary Ale was bottled in May of '06 - 950 cases, six bottles in each case and is the only batch that will be available. Its aroma is redolent of red licorice, nutmeg, wild apple, and hard candy. Its taste is malty with date and fig notes with a finish that is crisp, striking a balance between dry and fruity. We suggest serving this rustic brew at cellar temperature. Our 11th Anniversary Ale would make a perfect addition to foods such as roast duck and venison, or with desserts like pumpkin pie and apple cobbler

#23 [Blind tasting @ Papsoe] Large thick creamy beige head which mostly lasted. Excellent thick film like lacework. Dark mahogany colour. Pineapple, peach, grapefruit, pine, citrus. Over the palate roasted malt, fruity and liquorish. Full bodied with a very dry texture and an average carbonation. Moderated bitter and sweet flavour. Dry and bitter lingering finish. 4 / 8 / 8 / 4 / 16 = 4.0

First rated 19-06-2007: 3.6 Bottle. Small fizzy white head that mostly diminished. Fair lacing. Clear sparkling body with an amber color. Aroma of caramel to the point of toffee like notes, sweet grain, floral, herbs, hint of citrus, very Belgian yeast like notes with some peach, clove – fruity notes as well. Full bodied with an average carbonation and light alcoholic texture. Moderated sweet flavor with light notes of bitterness and acidic. Somewhat fruity and light citrus finish..

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of pineypower. Clear, reddish amber with tiny impurities and an off-white head. Sweetish, fruity nose with a whiff of yeast. Quite a full body, sweetish caramel and fruit accents and again a hint of yeast. Very subdued bitterness. 160607

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, tupalev & jerc - courtesy of HogTownHarry. Hazy reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Sweet aroma of orange and caramel, with a yeasty edge. Flavour is sweet to start, with a surprising bitterness and boozy warmth come through in the finish. Very nice strong beer from this always interesting brewer.

Hazy brown body, with a small beige head (3+) Malty sweet caramel aroma has a yeasty hoppy bite. (7+) Similar flavour with more hops than you might expect from a Belgian style. Bitterness provides an interesting contrast to the sweet malty caramel flavours. Medium effervescent palate is pleasant. Very well executed.

Appearance: Pours out a clouded amber body with a fluffy, off-white head. Smell: Partly tart nose, with light notes of toasted caramel, sugar cookies, apples, and apricots. Heck, there’s even some bananas in there! Taste: A light toffee sweetness comes through in moderation, reshaped by the flavors of cinnamon spiced apples, molasses, spearmint, and fresh ground pepper. All with a distinct vinosity! Only in the finish do the hops, providing a moderate bitterness, fully emerge. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body that is bolstered by a delightfully lively, almost spritzy carbonation. Drinkability: Subtle, elegant, but interesting - a fairly nice Belgian Strong Ale.

Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, tupalev & jerc -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a small diminishing off-white head. Aroma of fruit, sweet malt, floral hops, sugar and Belgian yeast. Flavour’s sweet, fruity and yeasty along with alcohol, brown sugar, spices and some hop bitterness in the finish. Alcohol’s pretty well hidden. Medium bodied. Not my favourite version of the style but it’s well done.

Shared with blankboy, Hogtown Harry, GregClow and jerc, Harry’s bottle. Dark brown, small white head. Nice malty aroma - a little sour. Good taste - malty, spice a bit of alcohol heat. Good stuff.
