Head retention was nice in my De Rocs chalice, very happy to drink this guy just slightly chilled. Brown sugar, earthy, zesty hops, and some baking spices on the nose. The palate leads into a granny smith apple followed by more spices and a marzipan plateau that seems to flatten out as the alcohol hits. Finishes with a lingering sense of nutmeg, cardommon, and little bits of anise. I think that with age, the flatness in palate and the baked goods will mellow and transform into leather, mission figs, and rich port-like characteristics. Almost a shame to say that I will not have this beer in the near future. But cellaring does have its rewards. thenick (746), North Bellmore, New York, USA

Pours a deep, orange-red with a slightly lacy off-white head. Aroma is dough, with slight malt, nutmeg, and apple characteristics. Taste is very doughy, but I detected some red licorice, apple, malt, and nutmeg as well. The champagne yeast adds an incredible effervescence and liveliness to the beer that makes you always want to come back for more. I absolutely love this beer, a unique offering with a great flavor. brigg (216), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jul 8, 2007 Updated: Aug 21, 2007(750 ml bottle) Body is hazy, dark amber with a diminishing off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt, over-ripe fruit (strawberries, orange, lemon, raisins), and underlying alcohol nose. Full-bodied and oily mouthfeel that gives a very odd sensation of the beer sliding around the mouth on its own while a little carbonation awakens. Flavor is sweet with fruit and malt along with some spice. The finish is incredibly balanced between the sweetness and alcohol as well as the pleasant mouthfeel.
On a second tasting, I noticed some tartness that I did not before. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 29, 2006 750 ml bottle. Pours to a slightly hazy, deep caramel color, with a slight white head, that fades, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful, with lots of good aromas of sweet toffee, some spicy yeast, and hints of estery/fruity sourness. The palate is slick, with good toffee and bready malt flavor, paired with some lightly sour fruity esters, and yeasty flavors. This beer finishes with more good toffee malt flavors up front, then with some yeasty flavor that lingers. Delicious, wondeful sipping brew. This beer would work well with a number of dishes, and would match a great beer to match with beef, pork, turkey, or game. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 5, 2006 Really nice-looking brew: big, frothy off-white head over a slightly cloudy copper body. Very grape-like, cellared and sour aroma - full and inviting. I’m impressed with the smoothness of this beer. Incredibly drinkable, pleasantly sweet, yet perfectly balanced bitterness. Raisons and pllums, yet herbal, earthy flavor. Very good. notalush (2686), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 5, 2006 Cloudy copper/amber pour - unlike beastie’s bottle, my sample had a huge, frothy, nearly cappucino-like head, continually fed by hundreds of little bubbles drifting upwards from the bottom of the glass - bright, complex, fruity aroma, with notes of raisins, apple, apricot, peach - background notes of bread yeast and sweet orange jam - the carbonation is very soft on the palate - quite spicy throughout, tasting like a strong saison with bsa influence - a very strong cider-like quality is also quite dominant - other fruits (pear, apricot, a bit of fig) pair well with the underlying sweetness, but the spices and gentle hop bitterness keep the beer from becoming cloying - another wonderful brew from Allagash, but, as with most of their other recent releases, not really worth the hefty price tag (I paid 16.99). | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 8, 2007 750 ml. corked & caged Belgian bottle. No freshness date seen. Loud pop releases cork. Poured out a deep orange color, with a sticky tan colored head. Aromas are of spiced apples, candy, caramel. Flavors are of candied apples, citrus, caramel. Decent body, soft yet persistant carbonation. Thick, rich body overall.
Best beer from Allagash in years. Too bad it’s a "one of." hopscotch (5528), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Mostly clear burnt orange ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The nose is perfumey and fruity with notes of red wine, wood and banana… mildly acetic. The flavor starts off hot and sticky-sweet, but ends up nearly balanced. Medium sherry-like. Lightly acidic with a dash of salt. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Lengthy, malty, vinous finish. World class beer!
