Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Sampled during Deliriumfest’s Graduation tasting in Maplewood, MN and shared by Delirium. From a 750 ml bottle pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with a foamy off-white head that has excellent retention. Aroma of toasted dark malts, chocolate, some coffee, molasses and a touch of black licorice. Taste is full bodied, very light carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, some coffee and a touch of black licorice. Finish is semi-sweet with a mild sweet toasted dark malt and flowery bitter aftertaste that slowly disappears.

Roasted malty aroma... Deep black in color.... Some initial sweetness to complement the roasted malts and hints of espresso.. Coffee flavor lingers on the palate... Great beer.

This was a strange beer. Black pour with a thin tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Flavor is mildly chocolaty with some coffee notes. tastes great up front, but then it almost disappears. It doesn’t really have a finish at all. Odd. Still, not bad.

750ml bottle shared by BeerGestapo, thanks Mike. Pours black with a large foamy tan head. The smell was bitter chocolate with hints of roastedness, alcohol, phenolic, and plum. The flavor was more licorice with some dark chocolate and a bit of sweet fruitiness. It had an amazing mouthfeel, it had a sting of carbonation at the tip of the tongue but by mid palate it was completely foamy and thick like a milkshake. Very interesting.

Brewed in the USA..... Pours black in color with a nice medium foamy beige head. The aroma is of dark fruits like plums with some chocolate notes and dark malts. Taste is of licorice, spices, malts and mild coffee. the mouthfeel is kind of spritzy with a nice foamy body and finishes with some dry bitterness. Overall, I really like this stout and i might buy another one in the near future.

Bottle. Fruity, roasty, somewhat sweet aroma, hinting of coffee and chocolate. Deep brown body, light brown creamy head. It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of much of Allagash’s over-sweetened line, but with this one they’ve managed to hit just the right balance between a foreground roasty, bitter-chocolate and coffee maltiness, and a background touch of mitigating sweetness. The balance continues into a lengthy finish, and the whole thing works deliciously. This is really a super brew.

A very innovative beer. It has the candy-like sweetness that you expect from a belgian strong ale, plus the roasted, malty flavor of a strong stout. I agree with Elwood’s review, there are definitely some chocolate-covered cherries in here. I really liked it, and the flavors meshed together a lot better than I expected.

Bottle. Poured an opaque black color. The head was light brown with good retention and lacing. Interesting mix of aromas that included the likes of subdued smoky bacon, chocolate, and saltine crackers. There was also a whiff of anise. Medium bodied with carbonation on the higher end of the spectrum. A bit salty up front with delicate sweetness emerging toward the end along with mild roasty bitterness. Subdued roasted malt, light chocolate, cola, and minimal toffee. Not bad, but a bit overrated in my opinion.
