| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 12, 2009 Served from 750ml bottle. Pours dark brown/black with a soft tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Black fall somewhere in between the sweet and dry categories of most true Belgian stouts. The flavor was very sweet with lots of chocolate and roasted malts, but the finish was much more dry. Overall a remarkably fine beer. iowaherkeye (1882), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 11, 2009 750mL, no date thanks to GeneralGao (Colin) for giving this to me some time ago. Pours a clear ruby with a 1 1/2 finger creamy beige head, great retention. Roasted malts and dark chocolate are up front with a good dose of the unmistakable aroma of Belgian yeast. There’s also a bit of powdered sugar, hazelnuts, and a tinge of spicy alcohol. The flavor has the roast character slightly restrained, but there’s plenty of chocolate to make up for it. There is also a little bit of vanilla notes along with the aforementioned Belgian yeast. Semi-dry and roasty (and vanilla-y) in the finish with the bitterness peaking around a 3. Light to moderate creamy carbonation with a medium body. I figured this would be average, but it turned out to be a very tasty beer. elihapa (1070), Honolulu, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2009 On tap, Eli Cannon’s. Pours dark brown-black with heavy lacing. In fact, the bartender had to spend around one minute pouring out and refilling this to give me the most beer possible. A sin to beer connoisseurs, but more for me to drink! Aroma is very yeasty, with concentrated malt sweetness and licorice. Flavor initially tastes like a schwartzbier (slight toastiness, heavy sweet malt, some dryness), but some Belgian yeast and spiciness show up just in time to keep this beer afloat. Overall, I wasn’t thrilled, but this brew does have excellent drinkability and a deluxe, creamy mouthfeel. lithy (1850), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 9, 2009 Dark black, soft tan head. Aroma of chocolate, soy sauce, roasty malt. Taste is more chocolate, soy sauce, roasty body, thin feel, alcohol finish. Suttree (2748), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 1, 2009 Black, so no false advertising there. Lots of coffee and some yeasty fruityness. Flavor is a mix of coffee, blueberry and some roasty flavors, and some more yeasty flavors. Nice stuff. brigg (216), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 27, 2009 (bottle) Big, brown head whose bubbles cascade down at first, then stabilize and expand to make big pockets and craters. Body is opaque and black. A roasty aroma, but still sweet; nuts, chocolate, earthy, leathery. There a tad sweetness up front but quickly dries out. Dark roasted, slightly burnt flavor of chocolate and coffee beans. Acidic and mildly bitter. Full bodied.
