Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Bottle. Pours to, well..black. Fairly small sized head. Aroma of deep chocolate, coffee and a hint of yeast as well. Definite undertones of toasted malty flavor. The body is fairly thin with a good deal of effervescence. I had expected a bit more syrupy feel for a stout but this is a real treat. Unexpectedly light without sacrificing flavor at all. Notes on the aroma come through, with a bit more toasted flavor. Fairly sweet finish. Impressive beer.

On tap at the Publick House in Brookline. The body is a semi transparent black with dark caramel colors at the edges. A big tall light brown head has good resiliency and leaves a nice thick lacing on the glass. The smell is mostly sweet malts with some dry hay or dusty wood notes. The flavor starts out sweet and woody but finishes with a lot of yeasty bread and bitterness. In addition the mouthfeel was really airy and light which confused my pallate. I felt like this beer wanted to have a sour profile but never really got there, and the sweet stout aspects were not coheshive with the belgian yeast and malt profiles.

On tap at City Beer Store in SF. Aroma of roasted chocolate malt and Belgian yeast. Taste of coffee, yeast, and dark fruits. Average on the mouthfeel for a stout. Dangerously drinkable.

Pours black with a fluffy, off white head. Chocolate candy nose with a belgian yeast influence. Flavor is smooth. Chocolate, tobacco, slight coffee, and candy sugar. Some yeast too. Absolutely great.

On tap at Toronado. Big disappointment for me after a lengthy period of coveting this beer. Overly sweet but very complex flavor with notes of sweet chocolate and vanilla coming through the strongest. Licorice-roasted-malt-oak-earthiness-coffee were all present as well. The candi comes through strongly. Very mild feel. Clearly a lot of effort is put into this beer and it is appreciated. Unfortunately the end result was underwhelming for a fairly price Allagash brew. Too sweet and too mild.

A soft yet sudsy mocha head fades rather quickly over a deep brown body bronzed with garnet highlights. Sweet grape/taffy aroma with chocolate malt and light roastiness beneath. Full and fluffy in the mouth. Flavor is chocolaty with moderately cloying sugars. Mild coffee roasts make attempts at bittering, but the sweetness is quite dominating. Some vinous notes in the finish. Drinking this was comparable to craving some high quality chocolate and biting into some cheapo off-brand. Drinkable, but I winced a lot. ~~~~~750 ml of unknown origin, consumed December 2008.
