Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

On tap at Toronado. Big disappointment for me after a lengthy period of coveting this beer. Overly sweet but very complex flavor with notes of sweet chocolate and vanilla coming through the strongest. Licorice-roasted-malt-oak-earthiness-coffee were all present as well. The candi comes through strongly. Very mild feel. Clearly a lot of effort is put into this beer and it is appreciated. Unfortunately the end result was underwhelming for a fairly price Allagash brew. Too sweet and too mild.

A soft yet sudsy mocha head fades rather quickly over a deep brown body bronzed with garnet highlights. Sweet grape/taffy aroma with chocolate malt and light roastiness beneath. Full and fluffy in the mouth. Flavor is chocolaty with moderately cloying sugars. Mild coffee roasts make attempts at bittering, but the sweetness is quite dominating. Some vinous notes in the finish. Drinking this was comparable to craving some high quality chocolate and biting into some cheapo off-brand. Drinkable, but I winced a lot. ~~~~~750 ml of unknown origin, consumed December 2008.

Darker brown pour with a medium head. Aroma is a bit grainy with some light chocolate and dark bread. Flavor is mostly a brown ale thats light on the nuttiness and a tad heavier on the chocolate. Not bad, but pretty weak for Allagash.

This is a hard hitting stout. Very heavy on the chocolate and coffee malts but they are washed out by the high alchol content and smokiness. This is a great stout but nothing that screams unique or origional.

Damn right! this is a stellar beer. Black pour, nice brown head. aroma is chocolate, belgian yeast, molasses and anise. Flavor is delicious. Chocolate, yeast, dark fruit, charred wood and some slight hops make this a very nice sipper. Kudos to Allagash!

Trade with After4ever, thanks Tom. It’s black with a red hue and a huge, creamy head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, cough medicine, licorice, anise and rubber. The flavour has sweetness, notes of anise, rubber, licorice, roasted malt, yeast, chocolate and a very light bitterness. I’m never thrilled when brewers mix Belgian and US styles, and this beer is no exception. It’s good, certainly, but not one I would buy, if it came to the country.
