Fluffy roastiness delineates a yeasty fruitiness, as chocolatey opinions team up with minty spiciness to liven up this gentle and thoughtful Belgian-style Stout (whatever that means).
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the brownish black.
-The roasted malt provides some decent bitterness.
-The mouthfeel is authentically Belgian, classy and peacefully effervescent.
-The inherent spiciness is peppery at times as well.
-The fruit character developed by the yeast and the sugars recalls dates, at times.
-This seems to age quite well; more will have to be had (for scientific purposes, of course...)

Smells of chocolate, some coffee, some fruit hints, yeast. Rich malts, bitter chocolate, coffee, some fruity phenols, a touch acidic, a little bready yeast flavor. Quite smooth and dries nicely. Very nice. TeamTrappist (412), jericho, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 29, 2008 On tap. Poured nice and black, with a thin yellow head. There is no doubt that this beer is what the brewer says it is, a belgian stout. Nicely carbonated, with a medium bodied mouthful that goes down real easy. Some burnt notes, and hints of chocolate and coffee. I often dislike combination beers, but I really like this beer. Very similar to De Dolle Extra. Nice strong bitter finish too. Good solid beer. jthg (68), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 28, 2008 4 beers in. It is straight up black goodness. First, it smacks you in the nose with a whopping dose of coffee and dark chocolate. When you stick it in your mouth, you quickly realize that it is packing: a strong roasty, toasty astringency. This is a smooth operator of a beer. Don’t mess with this one!
In the end, the black version of the Allagash white is just bigger. FirmButtstone (47), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 26, 2008 Very nice toasted malt with a distinct Belgian character. I really like this beer and could drink it all night. Not too rich to mask the Belgian qualitys, but rich enough to get the stout notes in there. Very tasty. VTHopHead (928), Barre, Vermont, USA
