Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

1. From the Jug at the GABF Colorado Convention Center, Denver 11/10/2008 Fruit and some roast aromas. Tan head. Dark coloured and rich on the palate with a bitter lasting malt finish. 2. From the Bottle at RBESG Harlequin, Sheffield 19/07/2009 Floral aroma. Big beige head. Dark coloured sweet on the palate and malty with a little dryness in a crisp and bitter chocolate roast finish.

Tap. Pours black with brown head. Aroma was lacking. Flavor had some malt and chocolate, but not intense. Having it on tap was probably what kept out the yeast flavor which I love. Kind of one dimensional but solid.

Again, Allagash is still finding nice ways to twist classics. The belgian yeast for this take on stout works perfectly, as does the champagne style bottle conditioning. Nicely balanced stout with exceptionally smooth mouth and plenty of complexity. Stood up well to an intense chocolate dessert.

On draft at Thinking man. Pours a near clear dark brown with creamy tan head. Nose is roasty, with cocoa that comes out more in the flavor. The abv is fairly well hidden with just a touch of warmth on the tail. Some dark cherry juice as well. Moderately creamy palate. Kinda like a sweet stout with a belgian flare. Not bad

Tasted at brewery. Clear and deep brown, brownish and fine creamy head. Aroma is dark and toasted, it smells bitter from malt. The flavor lingers, chocolate and hops mingle to make it drinkable. Body is fairly thin (reminds me of Guinness) but full of flavor. Yay beer!

On tap at Ashley’s. Poured black with a light brown head. Aroma was full of roasted malts and a sweet chocolate undertone. Flavor began full of roasted malts, then a sweet dark candy flavor led out to the finish. Seemed a bit like a sweet stout.

Dark caramel color with a thin white head. Strong licorice flavor compliments the brown sugar aroma. Really different than anything else I’ve had.

Julio’s Belgian Beer Festival. Sample.Although closer to a stout than a belgian ale, the belgian yeast definitely makes this one interesting. A bit on the thin side though it does pack some flavor.
