DrBayern (894), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Mar 21, 2008 22 oz. bottle on 3/21/2008. Brown/black with mahogany highlights under a smallish light tan head with slippery sheets of lace. Burnt coffee, dark chocolate, molasses, and dark roasted malt aromas. Quite effervescent with a full mouthfeel, somewhat astringent, leaves a dry palate. Dark roasted malt flavors dominate, the bitterness subjugating the slight treacle sweetness to a minor role. Solid, but not anything that makes it unique or particularly special.
eaglefan538 (2026), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bottle from SL. Pour was wonderful, nice generous initial head with decent retention. Aroma was lovely, light yeast, gentle cocoa, nutty, well-complementing spices. The flavor followed along with some light fruity ester elements, licorice, and a toasty earthy aspect. All roast and smoke aspects were delicately present to combine with a dry finish that really made this quite enjoyable. Ally has some hit and some miss, this one far exceeded my expectations, well done! Imaena (189), Portland, Maine, USA Aug 5, 2008 Bottle and Cask Conditioned @ brewery and GLB. Sweet with bittering hop notes. Coffee, leather and tobbacco. The cask had really earthy and mossy notes. Much better on the cask. The head retention was the same in both pours. Body is medium and overall its a solid product. One of the more normalistic offerings from Allagash. jcr (817), Jasper, Indiana, USA Aug 5, 2008 Updated: Aug 6, 2008Draft at Rupununi’s. Sweet to start with a bitter, dry finish. Easy to drink because nothing is overpowering. Dark black flat body with ruby highlights. Average, creamy head that slowly diminishes. The aroma presents notes of roast and smoky peat with hints of coffee, molasses, nuts and grass. Bittersweet chocolate floats in the background. The flavor is moderately sweet, moderately bitter and moderately acidic. The finish is bitter with a very slight dry, metalic taste. Medium body, creamy texture. Solid, balanced and very good. MakeItDrinkIt (59), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 4, 2008 Super dark mahogany brown bording on opaque with a thick brown head. Aroma is definitely belgian yeast - spicy, with some roasted dark grains, and licorice notes in the back. Flavor is a bit strange at first - almost like a clash of the flavors - roasted granis, astringency, sweet fruity phenols and a funky kind of dry finish. Interesting, but not hight on my list of must-have beers. Jblauvs (131), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Aug 2, 2008 black pour with a thick light tan head. Dark Roasty malt, chocolate and a dark fruit tang in the aroma. First impression is alcohol, with some chocolate roast aftertones. Little too carbonated, prickly in the mouth as opposed to silky. Dry, woody finish. a bit thin. Overall decent.
