Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

Pours a dark brown, with a tan coffee frappe type head. It smell of smoke and malt. Very dry and the taste of smoke overwhelms the flavor, sort of like Scotch. Not high on my Stout list.

Pours black with a tiny bit of transparency at the top. Thin carbonated head with some thick dense lacing. Strong molasses aroma, soda water, alcohol, cherries, and a tiny bit of chocolate. Strong coffee flavor upfront, followed by creamy chocolate and a mix of berries. Mouth feel isn’t thick, but not thin. Very drinkable and throughly enjoyable.

Big fat tan head and a purely black body (surprised?). Smells pretty sweet and fruity with some roasted malts in there. Beer itself is kind of syrupy and has a slight taste of alcohol. A sort of Belgian feel is in the beer. Chocolate taste throughout, but in a different way than you would typically expect from a stout.

750 ml bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours a massive 2-inch creamy tan-colored head over a raven-black body with tan edges. The head holds retention well and provides solid brown lacing. The nose is fruits and sour yeast. Flavors are rich and malty with notes of coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, toffee, toast, and subtle yeast in the forefront. Medium carbonation and full body. A good, solid stout, but nothing really special or complex going on here.

The pour reveals a black color with a thin light brown head. Pleasant aroma of roasted malt and coacoa. Very good flavor of coacoa and roasted malt with some dryness and then bitterness in the end. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. Not one of my favorite from Allagash, but it’s still pretty enjoyable.

Dark beer, but not really Black. Foamy tan head that left attractive lace on the glass. Lots of cereal grains in the nose with chocolate notes. Very light mouthfeel like I would expect from the wheat/oats. Nice chocolate, roast grains and burnt toast flavors. Lingering burnt coffee and burnt toast in the finish. Very easy drinking and tastey beer.
