Commercial Description:
Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Availability: 750 ml bottles, 5.17 gal kegs ABV: 7.5% Original Gravity: 1.072 Recommended Serving Temperature: 55°F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55°F

750 ml bottle from City Market in Burlington, VT (January 2008) served at cellar temperature from a Maudite glass. Smooth light tan medium-bubbled head fills over half the glass above the totally opaque ebody liquid dies fairly rapidly leaving little residue....light chocolaty, licorice-accented aroma, moderately roasty but mostly sweet, bready yeast character takes a little while to come out but adds some interest when it arrives....the body is at first sweet and lightly toasty, with full-on espresso bitterness arriving shortly, deeply and richly chocolaty with just a hint of dark grapes, rather burnt and perhaps a touch smoky at the finish....beautiful, typically Allagash silky mouthfeel despite the quite high carbonation, very light on the tongue given the potent flavor profile....excellent; were the nose more expressive it could be genius.

Bottle. Nice head at pour quickly dissipates into a smooth, even film/sheen. Dark roasted malt nose. Sweet to start, with long bitter chocolate notes that don’t linger very long after swallowing. Quick finish.

Bottle. Pours a pitch black color with an ivory head. Roasted chocolate malt nose. Very sweet and pretty complex. Cigars, leather, licorice, smoke, dark fruits. Pretty bitter. Finishes dry. The mouth feel is very strange to me, something like foam or spittle.

pours jet black with a suprisingly light head (for a stout anyway). head dissipates quickly. nose is chocolate with that belgian funk. slight roastiness in the back of the throat, but less than I would expect. It balances well. hops are slightly noticable, but rather subdued. slight alcohol warming. overall a very interesting beer that I would drink lots of!

Nose is strong chocolate with light clove and peppery esters. Dense and mahogany-colored body with a white head, creating a nice contrast. Opens with loads of chocolate and rolls into dark-roasted coffee beans and a lightly bitter finish with some alcohol. Thin, slick palate.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Pours, well, black with a tan one-finger head. The bubbles are extremely fine and leave filmy lacing. Aroma is cocoa powder, Whoppers chocolate malt balls, tobacco, and a distinct ferrous note. Flavor is pretty simple: intense roasted malts with a bone dry bitter finish. There’s a light smoked/peaty character to it as well. Alcohol is nearly invisible. The fine carbonation washes over the tongue and ends with a great clean finish. The beer really vanishes from the palate. Body is just about medium, just enough thickness to satisfy but not too heavy that it loses its delicateness.
