Didn’t catch any bourbon in the nose, but the oaks is definitely there. Flavor is all oak, honey and maltiness. Pretty smooth but still looking for the bourbon. This beer tasted a bit young, a little age would do it well. malrubius (405), USA Aug 19, 2008 Rating #400. 750 ml March 2008 bottle split in Westmalle chalice. Hazy orange with lasting flat white head and some lace. Honey candy sugar and ripe orange aroma with a touch of wood and alcohol burn. Honey and ripe orange and ripe peach and mild wood, presumably with a hint of bourbon but I don’t drink bourbon so to me it tastes like wood and alcohol and mixed bitter ripe fruit with lingering candy sugar and alcohol finish. Medium-full body and medium-low carbo, but lacks the soft moouthfeel of the best belgians. Still, complex and interesting. Probably was better at 9.5%. I don’t like to taste alcohol in my beers. mar (558), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 16, 2008 bottle thanks to bhops. amber pour with a rocky white head. oak and musky malts on the nose. nice thickness on the palate with a huge oak flavor along with some yeast. some age would be quite nice on this brew. robforbes (695), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 11, 2008 pours a semi-hazy orange with a small off-white head, lively carbonation, okay lacing.
smell of fruit, bread, grain, touch of toasted caramel, nuts, malt, some spice.
taste is smooth, sweet, pear, apricot, green grape, grain, carbonation, some wood, slight spice.
overall a little too sweet for my liking. DubC5000 (143), San Diego, California, USA Aug 9, 2008 Translucent amber in color. Apple-y and grape-y aroma with touches of honey, pear, and grass. Flavor strongly bourbon-y, oakey, smokey, with a base flavor of deep malts, raw grain, and ethanol. No hop taste whatsoever. Not a typical trippel by any measure, seems to fall somewhere between a trippel and a barley wine. Unique.
