A: Poured out of a 22 oz bottle into two tulips. Good-sized, white head that stayed around for most of the drinking (which took quite a while). Very decent lacing on the sides of the glass. The beer was quite cloudy, and a nice, orange-yellow color. Sediment was left in the bottom of the bottle. S: Wow, there’s a lot going on here. Quite a good amount of yeast, and definitely some orange in there too. The alcohol comes through, but not too strongly, and the oak is quite present as well. T: Just as much going on as in the aroma. Starts off tasting orange and slightly bready, from the yeast, followed by the warmth of the alcohol in the back of the throat (not overpowering, but it’s definitely there). After a few sips, the bourbon-flavor starts to come through. Finishes ever-so-slightly dry, and the flavor lingers for quite a while. M: Medium-bodied, and very creamy... feels extremely nice on the palate. Average carbonation balances it off perfectly. D: This is an awesome beer to sip over a long period of time... the high alcohol content keeps it from being chugged. Definitely to be savoured with someone else who is likely to appreciate it.

750->tulip: Purchased directly @ the brewery in Portland, ME. Pours a huge, white, frothy head that exhibits excellent lacing atop a hazy, orange body. Aroma of butterscotch and a bite of something that I can’t discern. Heavily alcoholic mouthfeel, medium body, a good bit sweet and a short flavor duration. A very nice beer indeed.

A: It pours a wonderful reddish yellow color with brown highlights. There is a steady stream of bubbles to keep a half finger head present. Leaves behind a nice pattern of lace. S: Oh yes, I held this one back for a special occasion and I have the feeling it is going to be worth the wait. The marriage of America and Belgium. Bourbon and Beer. Smoke, Vanilla, and Malty Fruity Sweetness. Oh my! T: This is what I have been waiting for. WOW! This is one fine triple. If that is all we had I would be raving about it, then BAM, Smoke Oak, and Vanilla...Tennessee Bourbon Baby. Oh yeah this one is barrel aged and let me tell you the ageing did wonders. The bourbon taste makes this beer almost too complex to process. There is a perfect match of beer and liquor. It is absolutely AMAZING with the ribs cooked we over charcoal and hickory! M: Drinks like a Triple kicks like a bourbon on the rocks. A perfect sipping beer.

Has a nice woody, vanilla aroma with slight floral notes. This beer, being a tripel, stands up nice to the aging in oak barrels. IT definitely takes on a nice woody character in the taste, with the whiskey notes coming through but it is not overbearing. I am not huge on tripels as a rule but this one with the added dimension of the bourbon barrel aging is quite nice. Moderate carbonation, nice mouthfeel. Especially good with a nice cheese (bergeron fr. quebec). Overall a good experience, nothing over the top but very good.

Smells of bourbon, has a small head and a light body. Lots of tart apple cider and champagne notes.

On tap at Brouwer’s Big Wood ’09. Orange pour with a moderate white head. Aroma is very much like a granny smith tart apple cider with a touch of something reminiscent of champagne. The flavor is not as sweet as I would have expected from the aroma. The apple sweetness still exists, but I get much more spicy yeast, bourbon, honey, and a very dry, woody finish. Quite tasty, but I felt putting this in a bourbon barrel overwhelms the flavors of this tripel a bit too much for my taste. Still, this has a nice complexity regardless of that.

Cloudy orange-yellow, lingering white head, good lacing. Aroma is of apples, some sweetness, light yeast. Flavour is very candish, quite malty, high sweetness, fairly smooth. Finished long, light alcohol, sweet.

Very candish but pretty good.

750ml bottle.
Opened March 2009.
Bottled in September 2007.

This is another tripel that has gone become very vinous... this is the newer 2009 bigger abv version. Golden with white foam and chardonnay aromas. subtle wood, nothing citric, the body is light medium and it’s still very delicious but definitely not the deeper, more floral beer of past vintages.

Very good beer. Great texture, clean finish. Hints of sweetness with a nice bitter finish. Would definitely drink again.
