muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA May 16, 2002 Updated: May 27, 2005 May 2002: Dark brown nearly opaque body, medium stable head. Caramelly, yeasty nose with some raisiny character, very nice. I liked the flavor more than most of you; got a lot of smokiness and yeast, and it was reasonably fruity. Very dry finish for a double I thought. Another winner from Allagash. 8/4/7/3/15
May 2005 Draught pint sampled at Great Lost Bear in Portland ME with the illuminating and ruminating ClarkVV. Dark chestnut, lasting whisper of head...gingerbread cookies and thick caramelly malt in huge nose...could be a little yeastier & fruitier, but the mouthfeel is gorgeous and the chocolate notes are just right amidst light acidity and cookies...wow, even better on tap! 8/4/8/5 16 4.1 Rating is an average. Earlier Rating: 3/31/2002 Total Score: 4 Batch 26; probably quite new. Just an absolutely gigantic head sitting on top of a very dark brown, nearly opaque body. Big aroma of yeast, lots of malt, butterscotch, dates. Flavor a bit subdued; very 'dark', thick and rich, with plum-pudding mouthfeel and spiciness--if anything perhaps too spicy and a little low on the sweetness; hints of coffee towards the finish. Carbonation level just a tad too high at first, but fine after it warms for a half-hour. Worth it.
Ughsmash (2996), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Sep 4, 2008 12 oz bottle. Poured clear coppery-iced tea brown with a short, creamy, well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma picked up dry-roasted cocoa and light raisins over dry fruity yeast and a little alcohol warmth deeper down. The flavor was well-balanced with darker fruits, chocolate, and aged caramel at the core paired with some notes of leather and a dark, spicy yeast.. just a few fusel notes on the back detracted a bit. Medium-bodied with emphasis on a nice yeast strain.. almost a sherry feel right at the end (with the fruit and some booze). Tasty brew! Bhops (200), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown. Aroma of malts and dark fruit. Some alcohol on the nose. Flavor is typical of a dubbel, with some added roasted malt flavor. Good mouthfeel. Decent dubbel. KyotoLefty (110), Kyoto, Japan Aug 29, 2008 330 ml bottle. Dark brown with an orange tint. Almost no head, but a bit of lace. Aroma: rich malt, chocolate and caramel, grains, dark fruit, Rich malty flavor, dry for a dubbel, good roasted action. Belgian yeast, dark fruits. Nice balance. Touch of citrus. A very good, somewhat stout-like dubbel. Well done. Quite complex. Doesn’t have that big yeasty Belgian taste, and probably not really sweet enough. Clean, slightly fruity finish. allfreej (290), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 29, 2008 Bottled (12 oz). Mahogony pour, tan bubbly head. Lacy. Fruity nose--cherry, alomnd, yeast. Flavor is malt, cherry, cinnamon, yeast, spice. Dry finish. Medium, soft mouthfeel. ewestern (83), Ohio, USA Aug 25, 2008 Everything about this beer just seemed weak. Aroma was decent with light citrus coming through. Pour is a basic amber with an off white head. Watery and thin feeling citrus flavor that ended with a sharp bite.
