Commercial Description:
The base of the beer includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. To give Hugh Malone its hop character we use generous portions of Simcoe hops at three points in the brewing process. To begin with, we use a technique referred to as first wort hopping, in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle we add Warrior hops, adding another layer to the bitterness of the beer. Later in the brewing process we steep a large amount of Simcoe in the whirlpool to impart a distinct hop aroma. Finally, during secondary fermentation in our conditioning tanks, we dry hop the beer, which instills a hoppy aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit. This 8.5 % ABV ale has a malty palate and a pronounced bitterness. It has a pleasant dry, hoppy finish. Original Gravity: 1080 by volume. Recommended Serving Temp: 45 degrees to 50 degrees F. Recommended Cellaring Temp: 55 degrees F

This is a good beer but why is Allagash doing a flipin IPA at $15 a bottle. I know a portion goes to a good cause, but come on. Aroma is lacking the intense dry hop aroma it clams to have. The hop flavor and bitterness come through well. English malt aroma and flavor with balanced hop profile. Not much Belgian yeast profile. I love Allagash but get the Tripel for half the price, and get much better beer.

(n) Belgian yeast, english malts, and an assload of simcoe hops? Interesting one from allagash. Pours a thick hazy copper color, smallish head, but plenty of active carbonation going on. Smells of muted candy sugar and some lingering spicy bitterness. Tastes more balanced and complex than the nose would suggest. Some sharp bitterness and booze. Yeasty sweetbread flavors fill out. Hop character seems to manifest more in the bitterness than flavor, though a fair amount in each. Palate is full and aggressive, filling out all over the place. Only real problem with this one is the same as the other Allagash big beers- $$.

Bomber. Poured a fairly translucent amber gold with a steady amount of off-white head. Good amount of hops on the nose, with some slight candied fruit notes. Mouthfeel is fairly hoppy, very fullbodied, and a good amount of malt that rounds it out a bit. Definitely some pine and lime in there. Fairly decent beer.

Bottle. Rich copper amber beer with a dark cream colored head. Light sweet malt aroma with a bit of oak and fruity hops. Medium bodied. Rich malt flavor with a bit of caramel, slight grass, light spice and some fruit. Lingering malt with a bit of grass and earth.

Murky amber color out of the bottle with a rocky off white head. Light yeast, malt and earth aromas. Flavors of dusty grain, chalk, yeast, leather, fruit and something metallic in the finish. The alcohol is very present when you exhale. Odd beer.

Naven brought this by and after a brief education on the Hugh Malone anagram, we dug right in. Very interesting group of flavors. Was this a Belgian IPA or an IPA trying to be a Belgian? Hard to tell, but it was unique and pretty tasty. I’ll echo Naven’s sentiments that this wouldn’t be worth $22, but I was glad to try it for the low low price of zero (and the contribution to Saturday’s nagging hangover).

Hazy orange brown pour. Lots of white head. Yeasty, doughy aroma. Some sour citrus fruit notes. A bittersweet yet sour fruitiness with lots of hops. Some alcohol. Actually not much flavor to it. Mostly yeast with some hops. Not bad, but not great.
