Commercial Description:
Allagash Speciale Reserve is a refreshing, light-copper colored beer brewed in the tradition of the Belgian ales of Brabant. We brew it in limited quantities each spring, and its distinctive toasted malt flavor, and herbal and fruit bouquet make it a perfect beer for a warm summer day. Suggested Food Pairings: Enjoy Allagash Speciale Reserve on its own, or with a light appetizer. Also try pairing it with shellfish, such as the traditional Belgian dish, Moules-frites . Serving/Pouring Suggestions: Allagash Speciale Reserve is re-fermented in the bottle in the traditional Methode Champenoise, and therefore contains a natural yeast sediment. Allow the bottle to rest upright for a few minutes prior to serving, then carefully decant the beer off the yeast. Style: Brabant Style Ale (Belgian Pale) Available In: 750 ml Bottle - Seasonal Alcohol Content: 5% ABV Original Gravity: 1047 Recommended Serving Temperature: 45-60 degrees F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55 degrees F (Not recommended for long periods of cellaring)

Not overly impressed with this one. Deep golden, cloudy colour. Flavour is a bit cidery, fruity, citric. A bit of a spritzy feel. OK, but not as good as their other standout beers.

Pours a dark golden, somewhat cloudy, medium creamy white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma is grainy, grassy, some cereal notes in there. Flavor is dominated with a cereal flavor, quite sweet, backed with a bit of grassiness. Fairly thin bodied, kinda boring.

If you like your Belgians high in alcohol with lots of oomph, don't try this beer, the beauty and complexity of this beer is there precisely because this beer is not a super charged 'American' Belgian ale.
.
This beer was batch #7. This beer pours a hazy orangish gold to copper color, it has a lively carbonation and a dense cream colored head. The aroma is fruity but grassy, with a floral hop note, there is a yeasty-musty-herbal note to it as well, basically it has a pretty complex aroma. This is a light refreshing brew, a style that so many breweries do not pay attention to or just do plain poorly. It is slightly sweet, but mostly dry, and the carbonation just dances on my tongue. There is a hint of banana in the finish, a bit of sharp biting carbonic acidity (from the carbonation obviously). At only 5% alcohol by volume this is a wonderfully complex Belgian ale. This beer is lightly bittered in the finish and it seems to have some woodiness to it as well. This would pair really well with a light nutty creamy cheese. As it warms up the malt brings a certain softness to this beer. There is still a bit of barely perceptible acidity and a fruitiness that, in combination, remind me a bit of cider. This beer has a definite malt backbone to it and though light and refreshing it has a wonderful mouth coating feel to it as it flows down my throat.

Somewhat medium copper in color, head fades quickly. Aroma is hard to pin down. Flavor is not very refreshing, as the word "summer" might imply, and this beer wasn't nearly enjoyable as I expected it to be!

A pretty good Belgian Ale, but it lacks a lot of emphasis in the flavor. Really needs more "umph" to be a better beer.

A slight departure from the brewery's formula, IMHO. I've only had this on tap, and only at the Great Lost Bear in Portland, ME. I found this to be fairly bland compared to their other offerings, but it did have some pleasing yeast, citrus and spicy characteristics. Finish was mildy fruity with a lingering finish that tasted of hops and spice. Interesting but I'll take the Triple any time.

Batch 8. Good Belgian ale. Spicy, earthy, and citric flavor. Finishes crisp, clean and dry.

I really found this to be less flavorful compared to the others in the style (Orval, Westy Blond). I got a very subtle, wheaty/malty/hoppy flavor. Maybe a touch of orange marmalade. Better than the 2.9 I originally rated it, for sure.
