Commercial Description:
Allagash Speciale Reserve is a refreshing, light-copper colored beer brewed in the tradition of the Belgian ales of Brabant. We brew it in limited quantities each spring, and its distinctive toasted malt flavor, and herbal and fruit bouquet make it a perfect beer for a warm summer day. Suggested Food Pairings: Enjoy Allagash Speciale Reserve on its own, or with a light appetizer. Also try pairing it with shellfish, such as the traditional Belgian dish, Moules-frites . Serving/Pouring Suggestions: Allagash Speciale Reserve is re-fermented in the bottle in the traditional Methode Champenoise, and therefore contains a natural yeast sediment. Allow the bottle to rest upright for a few minutes prior to serving, then carefully decant the beer off the yeast. Style: Brabant Style Ale (Belgian Pale) Available In: 750 ml Bottle - Seasonal Alcohol Content: 5% ABV Original Gravity: 1047 Recommended Serving Temperature: 45-60 degrees F Recommended Cellaring Temperature: 55 degrees F (Not recommended for long periods of cellaring)

Batch 8. Light golden with medium and soft white head. Yeast aroma, smells like a tripel...tastes like a tripel light, basically. Easy to drink but lacking body, some sweetness and occassional bitter finish, a good summer belgian perhaps. I like it for what it is, but go for the tripel reserve.

Hazy golden body with smallish off-white head. Aroma is sweet, clove, coriander, lemon, wheat. Taste is lightly sweet, some lemon sourness, light coriander, finishing herbal hoppy. Medium/light and watery body (not watery taste) makes for a pleasantly drinkable summer ale.

No aroma really, except for a mild bit of weak fruits. Not really much of a Belgian, especially with the low alcohol percent, and the lack of all-around flavor. Metallic and sour finish - with only a hint of apricot - makes me wonder is this is going to turn to vinegar soon or something. The flavor is dry and ash-like, and not very pleasurable.

[batch #1] I'm not sure quite what's so special about this, considering the fact that everything else by Allagash that I've had has been much better. The appearance is a perfectly clear golden, but this head is small and quickly and completely disappears - the aroma is a bit musty, as others have pointed out, but isn't all that inviting - the flavor is thin - there is some yeastiness present, with just a tiny kiss of malts, and a slight tartness that lasts into the watery finish - I think the best way to describe this beer is as a watered-down trippel - as seasonals go, I think this would be sub-par even as a summer ale, and as a winter ale is certainly doesn't stack up at all (good thing I'm trying it now, it's at least slightly enjoyable in the warm weather).

Yellow, somewhat cloudy pours with a fairly good size head. Musky, yeasty aroma. Start to fall short after that. Light yeasty and slight fruity favor. Dry finish. Not what I'd hoped for or expected from a Speciale from Allagash.

12 oz. Bottled on 3-18-04.Aromas of belgian yeast, spices, fresh appealing malts, touch of hops.Pours out a hazy deep golden. The taste is nice,a decent hop/spice tingle and some good yeast.Light easy drinking summer ale.If you like belgian whites this should also be quite enjoyable for you.Head was white & short but the lace was good.

Not sure what I think. Light gold, a bit hazy, big head. Odd nose, somewhat fruity, a bit of spice, but an odd medicinal quality that's somewhat reminscent of huffing Sterno. Flavor is dry and fruity, some spiciness. Bit of sharpness. Not quite creamy or fizzy enough, but not bad.

Picked up at the brewery exactly one year ago, Batch #6. Excellent bottle conditioning, a nice surge of foam, but no frothing. Surprisingly little aroma, what was there was of cooked malts. Looks good, coppery, and a lasting head. Smooth palate, well done. The flavor is initially malty, with some citrus tones, and just a touch of gentle hops and spruce on the finish. Reminds me in an odd way of Pepsi. Good enough, but didn't send chills down my spine.
