Sweet, dark fruit aromas: raisin and date with some grape and a hint of wood. Sweet malted flavors with an almost sugary finish. Medium bodied, but short duration on the aftertaste.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 19, 2005 Updated: Aug 30, 2005Rerate:Bottle. Moved palate rating & overall impression up a notch each. I now firmly believe my previous draft sampling of this was from a bad keg.Draft. Very deep blackish brown. Minimal light penetration. Thin head vanishes nearly instantaneously. Lively carbonation. I smell a vague hint of musty roasted fig or raisin. Seems uneven to me. Pruny sweet on the tongue. This is good, but I find no standout characteristics. After reading others’ ratings, I think this keg is either bad or there is some other defect in how this was served to me - but I must rate on what I experienced, so... noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 25, 2005 Super dark, opaque pour with sturdy beige head. Fruity, sweet first impression. Flavor is malty, with hints of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, and not too much hoppiness. Aromas of bread, rye and subtle malt. Very good all around -- must be one of the dopplebocks. I highly recommend. JPDIPSO (4912), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 2, 2005 Brown color with a tall head of small tan bubbles. Milk caramel and light smoke aromas. Smooth, rich and creamy feel. Mild malt flavors with with a touch of pipe tobacco and vanilla. Rather simple flavors that do not do justice to the feel and appearance. Finish is rather sharp, with a an acidic bite. Linger is great with lots of malt. This one is growing on me. Both the aroma and flavor numbers have gone up as i continue and it warms. A decent brew to sit back and relax. bu11zeye (5510), Frisco, Texas, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 3, 2004 This pours a deep mahogany color with a thin light brown head that soon becomes just a ring around the glass. This has a smooth malty aroma, perhaps along with a bit of earthiness. This has a big sweet but roasted malt flavor with dark fruits and a light alcohol presence. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 4, 2004 Pours a dark burled chestnut brown, bubbles do the reverse waterfall effect to build a nice, cookie dough colored head. Once the bubbles finish rising the body gets suprisingly clear. Smell is rich with malt, woodsy bark and earth, tobacco, light chocolate, and some soapiness. Mouthfeel is thin as the body look suggests, though nevertheless, the flavor does not suffer. Lots of malt on palate along with raisins, plums, chocolate and heavy alcohol. The alcohol actually caught me off guard as I was trying to gulp this thing down. You don’t expect alcohol like that in such a thin beer. Aftertaste is roasted malts, though not very pronounced. Pretty decent beer, but probably will not buy it again. A little on the average side.
