Once the bubbles finish rising the body gets suprisingly clear. Smell is rich with malt, woodsy bark and earth, tobacco, light chocolate, and some soapiness. Mouthfeel is thin as the body look suggests, though nevertheless, the flavor does not suffer. Lots of malt on palate along with raisins, plums, chocolate and heavy alcohol. The alcohol actually caught me off guard as I was trying to gulp this thing down. You don’t expect alcohol like that in such a thin beer. Aftertaste is roasted malts, though not very pronounced. Pretty decent beer, but probably will not buy it again. A little on the average side. GermanBrews76 (667), Eugene, Oregon, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 20, 2004 Dark, transluscent brown with a dark tan head. Aroma is toasted and very rich but still delicate. Chewy, creamy malt body with flavors of milk, chocolate, deep caramel, and alcohol-infused sweetness. A solid, balancing bitterness leads to a wonderful pint. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 14, 2004 500 ml bottle. Nearly opaque dark maple-rbuy, with a thick but quickly expiring off-tan head. Lovely brown sugar-Devil’s food cake nose, nothing astounding but a delight. Port wine, brown sugar, huge malts on the tongue, with a hint of dried herbal hoppiness very late and just a hint of sour milk. Well-balanced and delicious if not spectacular; the kind of beer I would have rated .5 higher three years ago when I was allergic to hops and loved the sugar more. jeffc666 (1896), Fairfax, Virginia, USA

A nice dopplebock. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA
