Flavor is malty, with hints of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, and not too much hoppiness. Aromas of bread, rye and subtle malt. Very good all around -- must be one of the dopplebocks. I highly recommend. maxhits (172), Pico Rivera, California, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 29, 2002 This beer pours with a dark, plum-purple color and produces a thin 1-finger head that settles fairly quickly. There is virtually no carbonation evident in the glass. This beer has a sweet malt and molasses nose. In flavor, this beer features coffee, toffee and anisette (licorice) flavors. There is a very slight, chalky mouthfeel, but the beer finishes round and with some warmth. Braudog (3774), Dayton, Ohio, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 15, 2007 Had this first at a Bon Vivant tasting and brought home a 0.5L bottle: It pours a nice roasty reddish brown with a big head of small bubbles. The aroma is sweet, almost raisiny or grapey, counterintuitive to the appearance. The flavor is similarly sweet and fruity, but there’s a big caramel-sugar anchor beneath it that makes this a wonderfully scrumptious winter beer. Prost! Has very authentic feeling about it that makes you think you’re in a German beer-hall, bellowing ’prost!’ with the other drunken sots. A very high quality beer, boys. eaglefan538 (2399), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 26, 2007 Bottle, pour is burgandy brownish, nice generous off-white head, great retention, nice lacing too. The aroma was quite pleasant, earthy, musty, lightly grassy, dark fruits, nice grapey-ness, itty bitty touch of floral notes. The flavor was earthy, grassy, grapey (this, the grapes, my favorite part), other dark fruits, dry breadiness, only light chocolate under it all, faint. The mouthfeel was dry, lager-like crisp, nothing sticky about this one. This was a darned impressive beer, very drinkable, lots going on, great melding of the various flavors. Not as much depth and slightly less complexity, but right up there with Celebrator and Andechs DD in my book. Wow, Allgauer makes something good?
