dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Mar 15, 2009 500 mL bottle from State Line Liquors. Pours a clear, dark cranberry red color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is light roasted malts and dark fruits, primarily raisin, toffee and soy. Taste is very bready with bristly hops, toasted malts and toffee. Very dry with only the faintest fruit notes. Medium bodied. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA Oct 26, 2008 Updated: Oct 30, 2008Shared this one w/ SkyCop32. Draft at the Bad Durkheim Wine Festival. Pours a medium brown. Aromas of wheat bread, caramel, and a touch of something metallic. Flavor is malty/metallic without a lot of character. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Jun 26, 2008 This one had the ability to transcend my utter disappoint for everything else from this brewing group, but it didn’t because it is so goddman sweet. There are a lot of great flavors here, caramel and toffee, dark fruits, but it would be great if it finished off dry and bitter, but it stays sweet throughout, not quite to the point of being cloying, but an unaturally amount to the point where it was unenjoyable to drink. JonR888710 (999), Cochabamba, Bolivia Apr 14, 2008 50cl bottle purchased at Chevy Chase Wine & Liquor. Pours a cranberry brown, with a thin, sandy off-white head. Even with a hard pour, can’t get more than 1/2 an inch. Still, what little head there is laces incredibly. Strong, sweet smell = caramel, cherries, leather. Taste is also sweet, but much better than the aroma. Anise, honey, figs, raisins, all in a creamy mouthful. Drying ending is roasted coffee bitters, makes the inside of your cheek sweat. Alcohol feels but doesn’t taste. Tongue a little numbed from the anise and alcohol. Needless to divulge, I enjoyed this rarity very much. Maverick34 (686), New York, USA Feb 17, 2008 Draft at Zum Schneider. Poured dark, and tasted great, maybe not quite enogh sweeteness but still I thought it was pretty good. CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Sep 19, 2007 Bottle: Pours a transparent ruby copper with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Sweet toasty caramel malty aroma has some lightly bready German yeast. Body has decent thickness and sweet dark caramel maltiness with some doughy German lager yeast toward a thinner, slightly drier finish. A pretty good dunkel. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Aug 17, 2007 Bottle. Alternating sweet and dry aroma, caramel and roast malt with red berry. Grapey malt touches, but not as much as in a Bock. Beautiful murky brown / chestnut pour with a big lacing rocky tanned head. Nutty taste with red berry swirling. Medial sweetness balanced by faint bitterness. Really tasty and addictively quaffable. Mf is excellent – crisp and silken, light-medium body with a good dose of malt. Solid Dunkel! bierkoning (5989), La Tropica, Netherlands Jul 9, 2007 Bottle. Pears on syrup in the aroma. Malty flavor with caramel and pear, flowing into a slight caramelly bitter aftertaste. Not too well balanced and a bit too sweet.
