Commercial Description:
The Captain is leader of a fire crew. This beer takes charge of your taste buds with its rich flavor. Roasty malt character that has hints of chocolate and coffee which balances the smooth, velvety finish. The thick, creamy head lasts and lasts, leaving lace in your glass as your beer disappears. This beer pairs well with food. Great with dinner or as breakfast or even with a rich vanilla-bean ice cream. 1.060 OG 31 IBU 6%ABV

Very dark brown/black pour, opaque body. A thin tan head is well-retained. The aroma is of roasted grains, light smoke, grilling meats, chlorinated water, oats, maple syrup and coffee grounds. Odd, with a tainted water/stale hop backnote that really ruins what would otherwise be a fantastic nose. The flavor is much better, though deep below the stale and chemical notes remain. Chocolate notes are rich and multi-faceted, bitter and sweet, with a small caramel contingent. Bitterness is mild, acidity is light to mild. Finishes off-dry, light bitter chocolate, coffee and earthy notes lingering. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, modestly carbonated(though what is there is very fizzy) and only moderately smooth. Decent, pretty drinkable, not exciting in any way.

Brew pours midnight brown w/ a full, creamy, spattered froth. Good head retention w/ a lasting full lace. Aromas of malted chocolate and a defined roasted coffee bean Full nectar w/ soft residual effers creates a velvety texture. A big roasted malt character enveloped in a chocolatey cloak. Nuances of steak, cherry, roasted coffee bean, leather, w/ a slight herbal essence. This brew lives up to it’s description. Theres a nice mild molases sweetness that keeps me coming back for more. The finish is bittered better than well but the thick malts keep it balanced. Highly recommended.

On draft at O’briens. I actually liked this one better then the Barrell aged version.

On Nitro at O’Brien’s. Nice aromas of chocolate and nuts. Very black with a nice cascading head. Left nice lacing too. Flavors were bitter coffee with hits of chocolate and more nuttiness. Pretty good.

Draft at the Carlsbad Pizza Port. Very nice looking; a dark black with a creamy tan head. Aroma was not very strong; chocolate with some oatmeal sweetness. Flavor was much of the same; but with the addition of some caramel/toffee and very little hops or coffee presence. Don’t normally like the Oatmeal sweetness; but this was good.

Cask. Deep black with a small tanned head. The aroma is somewhat soft and unexpressive - chocolate malts appear as well as a certain toastiness. A bit sticky, chocolate flavours with mineral metallic notes. Finishes similarly with some toasty caramel-type notes. Pretty good.
Enjoyed a pint at O’Brien’s on March 23, 2007.
