Commercial Description:
The Captain is leader of a fire crew. This beer takes charge of your taste buds with its rich flavor. Roasty malt character that has hints of chocolate and coffee which balances the smooth, velvety finish. The thick, creamy head lasts and lasts, leaving lace in your glass as your beer disappears. This beer pairs well with food. Great with dinner or as breakfast or even with a rich vanilla-bean ice cream. 1.060 OG 31 IBU 6%ABV

Bottle from Alpine brewery. A lot nicer than what I remember having on tap. pours dark brown, beige head. aroma of roasted malts and chocolate with light coffee nose. Flavor, medium body, reminiscent of chocolate milk, malts with some caramel, hints of roasted coffee. Finishes smooth with lasting coffee impression.

Didn’t really care for this one. A pretty typical stout overall, but this was highly acidic, with a strange overly sweet lactic character and not much body. Extremely forgettable.

July 2008: Alpine Captian Stout is very dark brown to near black in color. It kind of sparkles in the glass. It also has a foamy tan head that is mostly lasting. The beer is lacking aroma though. Maybe it’s old, but all I get is traces of cocoa and some roasted malt. This beer tastes acidic and quite sour like a milk/cream stout gone wrong. There is a very, very slight hint of vanilla, but the finish seems really burnt-like. Not good. The beer is medium-light and has a watery body and is way too carbonated. I am very disappointed with this beer. This is at least the second Alpine beer that I have had and so far am and grossly unimpressed with their beer!

Bottle. Rich dark mahogony beer with a dark cream colored head. Nice roasty aroma with caramel. Caramel and roast flavor with light coffee. Medium bodied. Roast, caramel, and coffee lingers.

On tap at Stone. Big fluffy head with big bubbles that drop out quickly. Lots of carbonation and bubbles. Sweet and light nose. Malty and light in the mouth. Rather blah. Dirty dirty glass.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Dark brown to black color; medium creamy head. Creamy aroma of roasted malt. The mouthfeel is at the same time dry and smooth, with roasted malts and coffee flavor, a bit creamy; the bitterness is balanced for this beer, and the final is not too aggressive, there is also a light sourness from the roasted malt. Drinkable but not impressive.

On tap at Stone Bistro. Appears brown-black with ruby shining through. Aroma is roasty, with wood and backgrounded malt sweetness. Flavor is that of brown sugar sweetness mixed with soy sauce and roasted malt. Pretty straight-forward actually. Palate is on the thin side, though the carbonation is quite prickly. OK, but a little bit forgettable.

Bottle 65cl. @ Papsoes blindtasting. [ Bottle #6. ]
Clear medium to dark brown color with a small to average, fizzy - creamy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, leight beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, mocca, light burnt. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20090612]
