Commercial Description:
Our annual holiday ale from Alpine Beer Company. A Bavarian Dunkelweizen was brewed as the base beer because of the flavor compliments it has with pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. We’ve used premium German malts and hops in keeping with style authenticity. Share this hauntingly delicious brew with a friend because two heads are better than one.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs and Liquor. The aroma is mild with signs of sweet malt that hints towards caramel or toffee but there is also light background of black licorice. Appears as a complex shade of dark brown almost black and has a fizzle of head that breaks completely down to leave the beer naked. I have to admit I was skeptical about making a return to Ichabod ale this year since I wasn’t a fan of it last year but after hearing a description by Joey I was convinced it would be different this time around. What a change in recipe though, there is so much spicing in the flavor that it just feels right during the fall season of its release. Tasting very much like a pumpkin pie indeed and I’m glad the recipe got switched up. Next year must at least measure up to 2008.

22oz bottle shared thanks to Josh.Poured a dark black color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of roast, lightly earthy, some spices,a nd light pumpkins. Tastes of pumpkin seeds, chocoalte, caramel, and some spices. The pumpkin (both aromas and tastes) where on the softer and subtle side.

Growler. Pours a deep black with a small tan head that fades to a ring. Sharp aroma of burnt, toasted malt, pumpkin, and spices. Taste is sharp and spicy, of burnt, toasted malt, pumpkin, and spices - not at all sweet. Lingering spicy sharpness. Quite tasty.

Bottle purchased at beverages for less in Santee. A very mild easy drinking beer. Not a whole lot of carbonation. A little bit watery. I did enjoy the subtle spices.

Tap @ O’Briens. Pours dark, dark brown with a creamy off-white head. Veggie and smoke aroma with a fair amount of spice. Taste was hard to pin down. Malty and creamy with a bit of cocoa and roast, but also a nutmeg and cinnamon kick. Throughout there is a strange taste that can only be described as tasting the way a jack o’lantern smells as it burns. I really don’t know whether I liked this one or not.

Bomber from Bev4Less. Almost pitch black in color upon pouring. Aroma is dominated by spiciness. Lots of cinnamon and nutmeg. Highly spiced flavors. Some roasted maltiness in the background. I can’t really detect the dunkelweizen qualities. Tastes like a roasty holiday beer. Finish is quite roasty. Not bad.

Bottle at San Diego Brewers Guild Festival 2008. Pours a dark brown. An interesting smokey pumpkin flavor. A different spin on a holiday ale that I have not had before. Pretty good.
