Underneath is a hazy, dark-golden body with dozens of streams of bubbles rising swiftly through the beer. This releases tart aromas of fruity and yeasty esters and sour dough, plus a background note of under-ripe bananas. Flavors of tart fruits and a touch of semi-sweet banana balance the wheaty, doughy base. However, despite the pleasant and balanced flavors, the beer is far less satisfying on the palate because compared to the wonderfully aromatic nose, the flavors are muted and fade quickly. Furthermore, the mouthfeel isn’t lively enough. It’s medium in body with nice, up-front acidity, but the acidity is very short-lived with each sip, leaving just a flabby, doughy mouthfeel. And since the carbonation is released so quickly and furiously when first poured, the mouthfeel soon feels a bit flat and lifeless too, especially in the finish. Visually, the carbonation never ceases to rise in streams, the bubbles becoming microscopically small and slowing to a snail’s pace over time. Throughout the session, the head slowly settles to a wide ring, leaving a few large patches of lace on the glass. Overall, this is a nice, pleasant, easy-drinking dunkleweizen, but not a great one. The beer really needs to be consumed quickly because once the carbonation subsides, the beer really starts to resemble a slightly carbonated cask beer. That may work well for some styles, but for at least for this dunkelweizen, it’s comes across as flat and lifeless.

Pours muddy caramel amber with a very impressive, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is lightly citric, some caramel, green apples and a hint of banana. Highish carbonation, fair mouthfeel. Flavour is a bit limited, though not bad. Citric, some slight roasted malts and caramel. Not the best dunkles hefe. shrubber85 (2995), Wallhalben, Germany

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jul 16, 2006 Bottle. Sweet malty and yeasty aroma with a little herby spiciness and a touch of wheat. I agree with bierkoning, there’s definitely yogurt there, too. Clearish brown with no real head. Acidic, tart, slightly metallic feel, slightly numbing. Strange maltiness. Strong caramel and lighter roast; some wheat and creaminess toward the middle. Hint of banana. Medium body. End is somewhat yeasty-dry. Not very satisfying. Papsoe (15107), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 20, 2005 (Bottle 50 cl) A few degrees darker than amber, but not completely unclear - let’s call it hazy. Handsome, tall, creamy head. Loads of roasted, caramelish malty notes with some fruity esters. Rather dry with a touch of hops in the finish. Not a bad Dunkelweizen. 010203 bierkoning (6099), La Tropica, Netherlands
