The aroma is roasted sweet malts and hints of caramel and dark fruits. Alcohol is also present. The flavor is much like the nose but includes Belgian notes as well (yeast). An interesting take on the style. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA

Very black pour with decent tan head. Aromas were chocolate and roasted malts. Some Coffee. Flavors were more chocolate covered caramel, and a vanilla finish. Still very roasty and yummy.

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Apr 21, 2008 11.2oz bottle. Thick, murky, brown color. Big, foamy head which isn’t going anywhere fast. Perfect spice and brown sugar aroma. Rich and full of flavor, but not that syrupy sweet thickness that dominates most. Rich and yeasty. Sweet and bitter. This one is all over the place. Sourness, cocoa, and candi collide. What a beer, possibly the Belgian Stout I’ve had, albeit none to stouty. Super recommended, this one’s a classic. georgekappus (296), Brookfield, Connecticut, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 21, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep brown with a thick chocolate head. The aroma was sweet and wheaty with a touch of roastedness. The taste was brown sugar, coffee and a delightful roastedness. It was a nice thick and sweet beer. hoplover406 (204), Crofton, Maryland, USA

Would not have guesed it as a Belgian impy....tasted more like a strong ale. Pours nut brown with heavy chunks and a decent light brown head. Big toffee aroma! Distinct Belgian yeast aroma and taste. Warming, but not hot. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 16, 2008 This is really more of a Belgian strong ale than an imperial stout. Lots of big fruity esters all over the place. Plum, grape, banana. Some caramel malt flavor and a very fleeting roastiness here and there in the finish. Alcohol is pretty prevalent all over this. It’s pretty smooth and refined, but it’s in there. I feel like some hops would be nice to balance this out. Right now it’s a little sweet. Pretty nice beer. I’m feeling like I should grab another bottle or two to lay down because this could use a good bit of age to come together. I see it being really good in a couple years.

Foggy chestnut with a huge balsa head that slowly collapses leaving chunky lace. Nose of dough and mocha. Bubbly medium light, a little oily. Taste is bitter cola and coffee grounds with residual grapefruit and vodka. Burnt, yeasty aftertaste.
