Commercial Description:

English: Forget what you think beer is all about when being warmed by this Old Ale. Forget the lack of carbon dioxide and the warm notes of wood and matured fruit require that this Old Man’s Ale is to be enjoyed in peaceful surroundings – preferably in front of the fireplace served in a big cognac glass. Old Man’s Ale has aged for four months on calvados barrels from one of the most prominent French producers; Domaine Familial Louis Dupont, and the wood grant soft tones of vanilla while the American Chinook hops add sufficient bitterness in order to balance the high malt sweetness and the significant and warming alcohol. Old Man’s Ale is indeed a beer for the quite and thoughtful moments – the cognac of beers.

No head and amber colour. The aroma has a funky twist with notes of prunes. The flavor is also funky and a strange bitter.

Taster from a bottle at ChrisO’s pre-GBBF tasting, 1st Aug 09. Very strong and very oxidised. Light brown with a flat, thin-ish palate. Rather dull, simply strong. Overall, disappointing.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown with some bubbles on top. Raisins, vanilla and chocolate aroma. Flavours emphasize chocolate, coconut and vanilla. Sweetish. Soft and full-bodied. Wonderful.

Bottle. Muddy looking brown beer with a deeply roasted and malty aroma. The flavour is rich and sweetly malty. Overall a nice strongly malty ale.

(Bottle, purchased at Ölbutikken, Copenhagen) Brownish amber colour with almost no head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of dried fruit, citrus, rubber, earthy hops, vanilla and oak wood. Vinous hints of alcohol. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, cherries in brandy, caramel, vanilla, oak wood and a touch of apples and calvados. Heavy alcohol notes in a warming, vinous finish. Full body, but the low carbonation makes it quite drinkable. Fairly sweet with some citrussy bitterness. Not really balanced, but a nice and tasty beer.

Bottle. Hazy orange, brown with a small beige foam. Aromas are yeast, berries and spices. Nutty with bubblegum and very peppery alcohol. Woody and herbal with floral perfume. Flavours are herbal and spicy with quite aggressive alcohol and some nutty notes. Yeasty with Autumn fruit and liquorice. Good but I expected more.

Bottle from Bier Koning.

Strong nose of red apple, caramel and dark fruit. Well hidden alcohol.

Well balanced flavor profile, but wish it was slightly richer and more complex. Just doesn’t have the flavor intensity I desire in a strong, sweet beer. Overall though, I still found it to be a solid beer. I enjoyed it.
