Jul 12, 2009 Hoppy nose, Cenennial they say, citrusy but not sweet at all. Loads of chocolate perfume. Dark cacoa powder, shaved 70% dark chocolate, a touch of coffee and then a raspberry truffle. Very complex. Rich mouthfeel is by no means from the crankcase and oily viscousity is not dominating. Suprisingly finesseful for such a big beer and abv. Almost a year old, it could go for another year or so I say. However, this beer is open, layered and very generous. Raspberry and Blackberry continues to whisper as roasted nuts and lava cake twirl around an espresso with a lemon twist. The texture is just sinful, velvety and somehow refreshing just when the palate needs relief. Seamless construction, with roasted malts and hop bitternes elevated and drying at the same time. Excellent, as good as they come.

Black color with huge head. It has a complex aroma with roasted malt, chocolate, ashes, hops that don’t fail to show some fruitness; very light but pleasant cheesy trace. Strong body, good mix of chocolate, roasted malt and caramel, and all supported by the minimum required sweeetness, and creamy; strong bitterness; quite strong alcohol presence, warming the mouth beyond the expected 10.5%, but never disturbing. In the final there are delicate waves of coffee and light liquorice. Excellent Imperial Stout, powerful well mixed and complex. Top.

Black color; big creamy head. Very nice creamy roasted malt aroma, a bit cheesy too. Good body strength, smooth; strong roasted malt flavor, strong bitterness, but also a light sourness, that I would like not to find. Very good.

Jul 11, 2009 Very thick dark tan head with hint of red. Deep black color. Bready roast malt aroma.
Palate is remarkable. Overpowering crisp and roasted finish. Alcohol is strong but subtle. Flavor of raisins and espresso.

Jul 10, 2009 Scored this from Stateline Liquors in Maryland. I was very excited to try this. The one thing that really jumped out at me was the floral, citrus aromas from the hops. You usually don’t find an imperial stout that has hope flavors and aromas this distinguished. That’s not to say this is a hop bomb, far from it, but citrus flavors cut through the heavy malt and make this one of the more balanced imperial stouts I’ve had. Pours a heavy, oily, opaque black with a frothy, creamy, tan head. Other than the hop aromas there was plenty of toast, grains, bread, raisins, rum, booze, molasses, maple, fruits, etc. The flavor is very similar, plenty of toast, sweet dough, coffee, nuts, dark chocolate, dark fruits, caramel, molasses, and again those citrus fruits. Finish is sweet, bitter, thick, creamy, toasty, very nice. It didn’t bowl me over with one particular component but it was very balanced and a nice sipper.

Jul 10, 2009 Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours opaque brn/blk with a two-finger finely bubbled tan head. Aromas of chocolate and toasted malt. First flavor seemed citrus, quickly eclipsed by strong dark roast/toast and chocolate. I think there’s coffee, but that could be the malt. Pretty dry. There’s a light fruitiness that could be hop floating in and out. Very pleasing drink.

Well, this one looks interesting. Cool story on the label regarding its namesake (additionally, Frederiksen is the last name of a couple of my cousins...also of partial Danish heritage, so thought I’d see how this one turns out). Impy pint, 500 ml...whatever ya wanna call it. Decent pffft of the cap so it sounds nicely carbonated. Into the Portsmouth snifter it goes.
Inky-dark espresso brown on the pour with a fair amount of clarity - in the snifter it gets more opaque and looks a whole lot more viscous. Head is a full finger and then some of maple candy/banana nut bread. Stuff really looks exquisite. Head retention is decent, lacing is very good. Head at first has that doughy coagulation going on but this down a fair bit.
The deep, dark, chocolate roast on this is very subtle yet creamy. Patent tannins provide a good backbone but don’t become husky and astringent. There is a quotient of dryish booze here - it’s additive rather than a nuisance. It reminds me of other Scandinavian stouts in its attention to detail. Well-hopped yet not obnoxious...Warrior? Target? Who knows - quite grassy with a little pine in there for good measure.
Lighter in body than expected. Not clammy though. The hop profile and dryness emerge in spades here - mild sweetness of booze in the background and on the finish. Deep, dark roast and patent malt do very well in this setting. Again, the "coldness" of the Scandinavian impy prototype comes along but one must admire the craftsmanship.
Well-balanced and of moderate weight for the style. Drinks rather easily and provides a dry, slate-like char on the palate while warming you back up on the slightly boozy and quite hoppy finish.
Now look out, ’cause this deal packs a wallop at 10.5% ABV. The alcohol isn’t exactly hidden, so best maybe with a big fat steak...or as a nightcap. Precision Scandinavian craftsmanship makes this one a nice change-up. Very well-constructed.

Jul 9, 2009 2008 Bottle - Thanks tjthresh! - Pours thick dk brown with a medium lt tan head...aroma is stunning, cocoa, vanilla, dk berry and black coffee, with some cream malt...flavour is dry coffee and cocoa up front that gives way to a chewy malt, dark roasted grain...never become sweet, just malty enough to cut the burnt toast...wow, very tasty...

Jul 8, 2009 Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to lightly skim surface. Roasted pit fruit and espresso aromas. Dark roasted malts upfront turning to a mild espresso resin finish.
