Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

Bottled (thanks Papsoe & Theis). Black colour with mediumsized brown head, which vanishes quite fast though. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, hops and roasted malts along with mild caramel and nuts. Flavour is nuts, roasted malts, smoked wet wood, coffee and some slight chocolate. Leaves nice burnt wet wood in aftertaste. Pleasant.

Bottle that was a present for cgarvieuk from a fine norwigan, however i drank it with ronnie and craig. Aroma is very hoppy, floural and citrus, very typical of scandinavian use of aroma hop. Taste is more like a stout, roasty but very very hoppy.

Thanks to Papsoe for this one (via Kaggie97/Zinister trade). Pours a black hole with thick lacing and tan head. Really hopped nose....fresh hops...flowers as well as light roasted coffee. Odd but very nice. Taste is hop forward with roasted coffee, licorice, and hibiscucs. Thin to medium mouth feel. Good beer.

Black with a brown head. Coffee and chocolate aroma with a lot of American hops on top. Sweet chocolate flavour balanced by a bunch of hop bitterness and some dark malt bitterness.

Draught at Københavnske Øldage 2007
Black color; huge creamy head. The aroma is soft, the mouthfeel is velvety, with a good mix of flavors, when in the end it leans on the roasted malt and its light sourness. Interesting.

The 1st bottle I am opening from Summer Santa and an completely unbiased opinion follows: Completely opaque with an ever lasting creamy beige head and above average lace upon my Stone IRS snifter. The nose detects heavy roasted and smoky aromas, bittersweet chocolate, anise, walnut, pumpernickel bread, grassy and citric hops and a hint of tobacco.

The taste profile starts with light chocolate mousse and sweetbread character supported by herbal and grassy bittering hops. I am getting a hint of wild fleshy fruit at midsection. The finish displays a solid dry spice and liquorice overtone. Very sharp and aggressive mouth feel, could be a bit more slick or oily however but then again this is a "standard" stout. Once it warms the hops become more noticeable and creates a depth of palate which is quite enjoyable.

Well crafted brew and one the I fully enjoyed. I really look forward to trying more beers from this brewery. Skål Jacob
