Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

Pours nearly black with minimal clarity and a tan, pillowy, average head which is somewhat lasting and leaves some nice, drippy lace. Nose is is very pleasant with nice milk chocolate, English toffee, and molasses notes, light roasted malts, faint anise, some floral hop notes, and some deceptive dark cacao notes on the end. The flavor is similar with some more bitterness than the nose led on; dark chocolate, English toffee, and Kona coffee fill the palate first followed by some dark bread crust, flower notes, and slight anise. Palate is okay with a silky and thin mouthfeel, drying just slightly, a medium body, and a moderate carbonation. Finishes rather quickly and bitter with lightly scorched wood, moderately roasted coffee, floral, and hints at smoke. A very nice stout with nice complexities, nice malt AND hop notes, and a very nice more to high bitterness from the roasted malts and the hops. A little like Avery’s The Czar Impy from CO but less potent with; similar floral , toffee, and anise notes. One of favorite table strength stouts.

16-JUL-2009. Bottle @home. I live on Amager, and off course I have had this several times since release. This was long my favorite danish stout, not least since it is very american inspired. Well let’s see what my first tasting of this after entering ratebeer can lead to? Dark brown with nice small beige head. Nose is bitter, partly from roasted malt and partly from hops. Taste is very much the roasted malt with tones of chocolate, smoke, vanilla, charamel, and liquorice. Mouthfeel is smooth with low carbonation, and unfortunately a little watery on the finish. Well it still holds up as a very good danish beer although not as ground breaking as when it was released. I will certainly still rebuy.

An almost black colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of coffee and roasted malts. There are fruits with cookies. The taste is dry, a little thin. Notes of coffee and roasted malts. The aftertaste has bitterness with some sweets.

Sample from bottle. Pretty good sout, nothing stands out to much though. Dark brown pour. Chocolate, roasted malt, smoke, slightly burnt, and vanilla. Nice flavor, medium mouthfeel.

From Akevitt. Black color. Roasted malt, with coffee and chocolate. The flavor and aroma are very similar. A thick, rich, malty beer. Almost no carbonation, which is fine for the style.

500ml from State Line. The beer starts quite promisingly, with a thick dark brown pour that leaves a nice half-inch head and some moderately sticky retention. Pleasant aroma of chocolate malts and bread. The mouthfeel is thinnish, however, and the slightly lactic feel seems to underscore the relatively one-dimensional flavor profile. Sweet and creamy, without quite enough depth to satisfy. Decent beer though.

500 ml bottle poured a clear deep dark brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, coffee, vanilla citrus and light roastiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, mocha, vanilla, light citrus and light rtoastiness with a smooth lingering chocolatey finish.
