Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

500mL bottle, no date from Perry’s Liquors. Deep brown--black in the glass--with a one finger creamy light tan head, pretty good retention. Big roasted malts and licorice up front. Light smokiness and dark chocolate are also present. There is a hint of brown sugar sweetness, but not much at all. Flavor is a little burnt, but there also seems to be a hint of peppery notes. Roasty dry burnt finish, bitterness around a 3-4. Never did pick up on any American hops. Light carbonation with a medium body. I can’t say that this was worth the $14+ with tax and everything I spent. Maybe half that, at best.

[Bottle, thanks CaptainCougar!] Pours dark cola brown with a small khaki head. Aroma has a lot of smoke, chocolate, and some sweet notes. The taste has a deeply roasted, ashy malt taste, smoke, and some bitterness. Medium mouthfeel with a long finish. Overall this was a pretty good stout, but I have never really cared much for the really deeply roasted, burnt tasting malt character that is so prevalent here.

Bottle. 1 month past ‘best before’. Pours almost pitch black with a small beige head. Aroam is roasted. Flavour is sweetish with rye and roasted notes. Remotely metallic. Rye and roasted finish with a lingering bitterness. Dryish and a bit watery. Remote notes of alcohol as it warms. A decent beer, but nothing special. 17-03-09.

Pours deep brown with a finger thick tan head. Nice full nose of chocolate and coffee. Same in the flavor, but a definite roasted influence takes over about mid palate and makes the finish a bit dry and harsh.

500ml bottle, batch 99, dark-brown color, with a small tan-colored head, leaving laces, nice roasted, chocolate malt nose, with a yeasty fruity accent of burnt raisins, plums, and some mochaish, cocoa, molasses, semi-sweet dark Baker’s chocolate notes, with a hint of vanilla espresso coffee in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, fruity, roasted, dark malt, black coffee character, with some smooth mochaish, cocoa, espresso, dark chocolatey praline, faint chocolate ice cream flavors, with a note of burnt raisins, dates, figs, with a mild flowery hop leafiness, leading towards a sweet mochaish, roasty, dry bitterness finish.

Pours onyx with off-tan head. Nose is patent malt, chocoff, brown sugar, hops. Tastes dark malty, peaty, with perfumy hops, cacao, heavier dark malt late, molasses, and some rauchy notes. Rich, complex palate with molasses, dark choc, and dark malt always at the forefront. If this is boring, then I have some Mikkeller Black for you to take intravenously.
