Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

Pours onyx with off-tan head. Nose is patent malt, chocoff, brown sugar, hops. Tastes dark malty, peaty, with perfumy hops, cacao, heavier dark malt late, molasses, and some rauchy notes. Rich, complex palate with molasses, dark choc, and dark malt always at the forefront. If this is boring, then I have some Mikkeller Black for you to take intravenously.

Bottle@Home. Strong aroma, chocolate but also fruity. Black colour, light brown head, good lace. Light sweet, roasted malts, pretty bitter, well hopped. Strong flavours, great balance.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a large dirty brown color head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted notes with light lactic notes also discernable. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some roasted malt with some black chocolate notes and a creamy mouth feel. Full body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Overall I thought this was OK but somehow lacking character.

What is not to like about this sessionable stout? Pours a very dark but clear reddish brown with a medium frothy beige head. Smells quite american, molasses, lots earthy green hops, hard roasted malts, some chocolate and just a touch of coffee. If it didn’t say "Danish" I would never know it wasn’t from the States. Flavor follows suit but married to a lighter than expected body that makes it really drinkable... all the flavors of a big imperial stout but medium/light bodied and very quaffable. Flavors of chocolate, hard roast, light coffee, slightly herbal green hops. Clear flavors that are just a bit turned down, quick finish. Doesn’t really have much of that ’burned" taste as they claim compared to other big stouts. Great beer, very Port/Lost Abbey if I dare say so.

Bottle. Dark almost-black beer with a tan head. Coffee, light chocolate aroma. Light roasty, chocolate flavor with some molasses. Medium-plus bodied. Roast, licorice, and some chocolate linger. Hops in background throughout. Nice balance.

Bottle shared by Paul I think. Nice, clean and smoky, chalky aroma, cinnamon and charcoal. Nice and smooth, great for the style, complex and punchy without being overwhelming. A chalky body has more smoke and molasses flavors, and a bit of funky malts. Nice basic stout. Not worth the price though when there are many other $2/12oz really solid stouts out there.

(Rating #2226)

Dark brown, hazy color and an fresh aroma with hints of smoke. Quite fresh taste albeit with the usual stout characteristics. I had it with the Danish meatballs (frikadeller) and it went along neatly both in the glass and as part of the dish.
