Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

20091117 500ml bottle from State Line. Dark brown, appearing thin, with sudsy, loose, almost soapy beige head. Looks limp, peaked, flat. Aroma is vegetal and burnt with some redeeming notes of cigar tobacco but for the most part there’s hardly any aroma to speak of. Body is as it looks, mostly limp, thin, and with only the faintest late carbonation. Watery and uninviting but with a late flick of drying bitterness. Flavor is also quite bland with some burnt wheat toast and chalky astringency. Only the slightest citrus pith presents itself, almost as an afterthought. Utterly disappointing. I’m so glad that at least it didn’t cost nine bucks for a pint. Oh, wait...

Thanks to badgerben for sharing this one. A dark brown color with a light brown head. Roasted malts and cops with faint cola character. A mildly bitter coffee character as well.

Bottle. Near black with a beige foam. Aromas are roast malts with liquorice and herbal notes. Smoky with light berries. Flavours are smooth roast coffee with pepper and liquorice. Rich with some gritty grain. Yeasty with a dry, spritzy finish and more herbal notes coming through. Nice stout.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a small, frothy, off-white head, somewhat diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (toasted bread, biscuit, cookie, cereal), light hop (herbs), average yeast (leather, musty) with notes of plum and date. Medium bodied, thin texture, average carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.
