Commercial Description:

English: Sundby Stout is a classic ”Stout” and yet it dares to be different and challenging. As soon as the beer is opened and you smell it, you sense that this stout smells differently than what you would expect. Late in the brewing process we have added the noble, American dried hops such as Nugget, Centennial, and Cascade, which provide flower-like notes that lay on top of the typical stout characteristics of burned malt that adds lightness and freshness to the beer. Sundby Stout appears dark as the night, while the head is dense, light brown – almost cappuccino-like creamy, as your tongue sense both malt sweetness and hints of bitter, dark chocolate and English liquorice. The sweetness, however, is rightfully challenged from the hard roasted malt and the split, un-malted and roasted barley, which both contribute to the “burned” touch of our stout.

Bottled. A dark brown beer - almost opaque though with a light brown shine, under a thick brown head. The aroma is very hoppy with notes of grass and grapefruit it reminds me of Cascade, but also with notes of the roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with a complex character of light notes of herbs, coffee, hops, grapefruit, and cocoa, leading to a dry roasted end.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours completely black and opaque with a beige head. Fresh aroma of aroma hops. Quite a rich and full body with distinct, sweetish, roasted malts with a fruity edge and a discreet bitterness. A very pleasant and friendly Stout - almost a Sweet Stout. 010407

50 cL bottle, celebration beer after 14 hours of work as elected voter in 2007. Pours dark brown to black with a dense chocolate brown head. Roasted malt with a smooth chocolate note and a mild liqourice edge blending nicely in with a lovely peach fruity hops aroma. Flavour is dry hoppy with peach fruit and a thick chocolate and roasted malt smoothness. Ends quite hoppy bitter and with an edge from the roasted malt. Quite nice.

Draught at Københavnske Øldage. Transparently black. small beige head. Dryish, roasty and spritzy with medium body. There’s licorice and lemon. Salty finish. Overcarbonation leads to a too spritzy mouthfeel, which is my one complaint.

Draught @ Københavnske Øldage 2007 in Copenhagen. Brown black color with a average frothy fair / good lacing mostly diminshing light brown head. Aroma is moderate malty, burnt, chocolate, licorice moderate hoppy, flowers. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a short to average duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. Mild and easy to drink.

Bottled (thanks Papsoe & Theis). Black colour with mediumsized brown head, which vanishes quite fast though. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, hops and roasted malts along with mild caramel and nuts. Flavour is nuts, roasted malts, smoked wet wood, coffee and some slight chocolate. Leaves nice burnt wet wood in aftertaste. Pleasant.
