Decadent, dessert-like nose with terrific aromas of toffee, bourbon, caramel and wood. Flavor is very complex and well balanced between the malt and barrel attributes. I really like sweet, strong barrel aged barley wines and this is a standout example. Metalhead (572), Lake Zurich, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 12, 2008 Several samples at a beer taste. Deep amber pour with a creamy head. Probably the bottom of the keg. Big hop/bourbon combo was pretty unique , sticky mouth feel and very good. Wish this was being bottled. JMerritt (1321), Macomb, Illinois, USA

Super dark garnet, damn near black until you hold it up to the light. Medium-sized tan head, nice lacing. Syrupy brown sugar and molasses aroma, a touch of alcohol in background. A little bit of green grape fruitiness in the aroma as well. Rich molasses and brown sugar flavor, touches of bourbon throughout with mildly biting pine hops in the middle and end of profile. Finish is crisp and slightly medicinal. kseecs16 (907), Naperville, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 18, 2008 Draught at the pub. Dark brown with hints of red along the edges. Thin off-white head, no lacing. Intense barrel aged nose with fruit, and hops in the nose. Very unique and tasty. Sweet hoppy malty combo of a typical barleywine mingle amazingly with bourbon and oak barrel character. Has a lingering boozy taste. As opposed to clashing with the flank steak sandwich I ordered it actually complimented it and assumed a nice port like flavor. A bit warming, but not overbearing, medium bodied and creamy. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 4, 2008 Aroma is a fantastic combo of dark fruits, figs and raisins with warming alcohol and malt with a big caramel kick. Flavor wise its similar with a slight overwhelming of the alcohol. Going down its got a little too much sting, but overall turns out to be a good solid brew. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 15, 2004 FOBAB’04: Golden brown with a sweet bourbony nose, hints of chocolate. Sweet and rich, alcohol is masked well, chewy malts were positively affected by the sweet oak, some bitterness at the finsih. Very good showing from an often forggotten gem in the Chicago suburbs. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 21, 2005 Updated: Jul 8, 2005Why I’ve only seen their pils bottled when they have gems like this at America’s BrewPub is beyond me. This baby pours out like golden syrup, only with the wisp of a white head. The aroma is heavily of bourbon, but there’s plenty of sweet malts creeping through as well. The drink is thick, almost chewy. It’s full of burning sweet malt flavor, some smokiness, some light fruitiness, and an adventurous amount of hops to balance the drink out. Very warm alcoholic finish. Good stuff.
