Light brown pour with red highlights and a big tan head that took a bit of time to fade. Aroma heavy on brown sugar, caramel, some raisins and a light hop note. Very malt forward brew, but some fresh hops on the back end and a light bit of booziness. Not my favorite barleywine, but a solid one. smcolw (366), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 9, 2009 Dark copper in color with a minute micro-layer of fine bubbles providing for a spotty, but noteable level of lace.
Smell: Powerful! Oily malt sweetness, similar to warm candy caramel. Lots of fruity esters. Strong medicine-like alcohol aroma, similar to antiseptic menthol.
Strong candy apple flavors up front. This concoction is very thick, rich and syrupy (like watered down maple syrup). Although the carbonation is expectedly low, it does provide an adequate foil to coy sweetness. There is a subtle hop bitterness at the end of the sip. That quickly subsides after the swallow to a sugary aftertaste. The strong aromas discribed above continue throughout the tasting.
Although this is not my favorite barley wine, I believe it fits the profile exceptionally well. This beer would be wonderful with tart desserts or as an after-dinner cordial. djd07 (751), Houston, Texas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | May 9, 2009 Bottle. Pours a cloudy dark amber with a small off white head that diminises quickly. The aroma is sweet fruit malt with caramel and raisin. Decent spotty lacing on the glass. The taste is a sweet malt with raisin an brown sugar. Hides the alcohol well making it very easy to drink. A very good barelywine from Anchor. peter48er (161), Liverpool, Merseyside, England
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 7, 2009 Poured a cross between amber & red. no discernable head. Malt notes with a thinly disguised hoppiness. Alcoholic strength was evident in the swallow. Not bad but not really what I would expect from a supposedly barley wine. Too thin. petematte46 (226), Dallas, Texas, USA
