Sweet nose and rather syrupy, with leafy hop in the background. Resinous and hoppy with lots of citrus and bitterness, tea-like sugar, alcohol and bready malts coming after, a sweet cereal/toast in the aftertaste. A little medicinal, but it’s tempered. Full bodied and a little thick, though not sticky or clinging. Not incredibly complex, but very balanced and quite enjoyable. sebletitje (1999), Tampa, Florida, USA

Pours amber. Little to no head.
Aroma caramel / malty.
Taste, notes of light chocolat , maybe caramel, little roastiness, sugary, borderline with soja taste. Beer is loaded with flavors. fishingnet (1047), Brandon, Florida, USA

Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, sweet alcohol, dark fruit, and a hint of hops. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium full mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 7, 2008 This is an old bottle, though I don’t know how old. I would say it’s an 8oz bottle, but I’m not sure when Anchor switched to the 12oz bottles. anyway. the nose is full of malty goodness, raisins, burnt sugar. no lacing. smooth and easy drinking for a barley wine. taste of english bittering hops are slightly earthy. slight alcohol in the nose, and slightly warming. The only thing that could improve this would be a hint of vanilla or wood aging - or both. JamesD (198), Centreville, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 4, 2008 I thought this was a great barleywine. There’s a lot of alcohol and malt to the aroma. Hints of citrus, flower, and cinnamon are very noticeable. The flavor is very malty, a little bit of christmas spice, and a nice warming feel coats your throat as it goes down the hatch. The palate is creamy, velvety, and extremely thick. This would be a good bread and butter, everyday barleywine, given it’s low price relative to other barleywines. mirjukka (705), LOHJA, Finland

deep amber transparent Taste pleasant sticky pine, citrus, caramel .Fruitiness kick in aftertaste. Warming alcohol presents. I tasted this last time years ago and it was more steamy than this one. Anyway I could think this as dessert after dinner. MitchWayne (264), Kokkola, Finland

Very balanced stuff, I could drink many of these in a row.... SuperDave70 (1158), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 30, 2008 Pours a deep amber color with a small but creamy tan head that sticks around. Aroma of dark fruit, deep roasted malt, brown sugar and citrus hops. Flavor is much the same, sweet and sticky with a bit pine-citrus hop finish. Almost chewy on the palate. Nice warming alcohol. For less that $3.00 a bottle, you really can’t go wrong!
