Aroma is thick with alcohol, figs, over-ripe fruit, and licorice. Flavor is overly sweet. Low bitterness for a barlywine and the 8.8% ABV just doesn’t hold up to all the sweetness from the caramel malt, and it eventually becomes cloying. Very little detectable off-flavor. A well made beer, but the recipe is just too sweet for me. CanIHave4Beers (917), Des Moines, Iowa, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 19, 2008 Aromas of licorice, hops. with floral and fruity notes. This is a pretty beer, a deep ruby red with a tiny white head that goes away alltogether. The flavor is particularly hoppy, with flavors of licorice, and a bit of malty sweetness. tedovertu (260), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 19, 2008 Moderately malty beer with perfume/grapefruit hops. The aroma has a slight soapy smell with a mix of cherry. Virtually no head, what head there is mostly diminishing and white in color. Crystal clear amber color. Heavy Acidic flavor. Medium to full body and dry texture. Moderate alcoholic overall after taste. Not a bad Barley wine. blutt59 (2172), Dallas, Texas, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 9, 2008 Pours a beautiful clear, ruby, caramel color with a medium off-white tan head. Delicious caramel, thick malt, and molasses/brown sugar aroma. Flavor has a deep sweetness of caramel malt. The body is very creamy and smooth, and the finish is slightly dry hop and alcohol. Gives a spicy impression overall, with a little overripe cherry. Rciesla (3851), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA

| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 6, 2008 Delicious. Fades from a deep cherry to a hazy orange as it comes around the sniffer. Small but lasting fizzy head. Aroma is pleasantly pungent and smells of a deep, unmatched fruitiness. So sweet and yet so perfectly offset by a background of salty, yet caramelized fried okra, high quality cascade, and a subtle tangy plum/dried cherry. Perfectly carbonated as well! The only beer I have tasted that compares remotely to Rochefort. Hopheads I’m sure want more IBU’s but this beer’s strongest asset is its balance. Excellent and fulfilling. demitriustown (705), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 6, 2008 12 oz bottle: Aroma is almost a sweet caramel apple like scent, definite roasted caramel malt characteristics, and a candy like aroma as well. Pours a dark ruby color with a thick off white head that lingers. Taste has definite got the caramel malt on the forefront, dark fruit like prunes or raisins, the candy note in the aroma is more subdued in the taste, and an almost wiezen like quality. Palate is sweet and nicely carbonated. Overall, This seems really good fresh. I can’t wait to see how this is when it ages as well. Cheers!
