IlanMan (466), Winona, Minnesota, USA May 4, 2008 Amber pour with minimal head. Aroma of light fruit and malt. Flavor is the same but a little more fruity (still minimal over-all). Alcohol is well hidden. Real smooth and balanced barley wine. Would buy again.
ontheroad (25), Buffalo, New York, USA Jul 15, 2008 Pours with a somewhat opaque amber color and a frothy head that lasts. Has a fruity, nutty flavor with a taste of alcohol in the finish. NachlamSie (1306), Tennessee, USA Jul 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours a brown/red, somewhat cloudy, with a pretty decent off white head. I hope this stuff cures my headache. The aroma is straight up barleywine, very malty with toasty notes and hints at toffee. A bit of those Anchor esters come through. Hm. The flavor is surprisingly balanced. The typical sugary barleywine flavor is here, tastefully so, with hints of vanilla, berries, oaky sweetness, and a very juicy finish. Though predictable, its balance and intensity are very well executed. Hoptagon (49), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jul 10, 2008 12oz. Bottle. Cellared from early 2007. Appearance of this beer is mahogany/ruby red in color with a medium tan head. Aromatics are complex with a mixture of dark over ripe fruits, burnt sugar and crystal malt. Flavor is similar with a heavy malt presence and some biscuit/bread like character. Carbonation is perfect, mild yet persistent and the beer is slightly heavy on the tongue without being overly syrupy. As this beer has been aged for a year and a half, the bite from the hops has subsided noticeably. Finish is dry with some mild bitterness. I’ve been drinking this beer for roughly 12 years or so now and while I can say that many breweries have caught on, few have managed to surpass this time tested classic. jameswolfe (88), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jul 7, 2008 REally delicious. Perfectly balanced malty sweetness with a good bite of dry hops. It is very complex with fruits and hints of malty goodness and a nice finishj. If only the bottle were bigger. weaselkenievil (282), Cheshire, England Jul 7, 2008 I found this really really sweet. Like Willy Wonka’s drip tray. Old Slugworth would love to get his hands on this stuff. Would certainly drink it again, not bad.
