Deep woody brown color with a substantial off-white head. Good spice in the aroma, esp. the nutmeg, with a curious vein of something Wit-like (cloves stuck into a Chrismtas ham?). The flavor had layers of complexity--first off was the hops, with a citric bent; then mid-palate was a chocolatey quality; then the finish was nicely roasted and dry. Still, there was a stickiness on my lips and an overall decent body--not too frothy, not too sharp, not too flat. A slight, lingering lactic quality. Overall, quite good. Plenty of malt, hops were understated, but that could be from the aging. Noticable spiciness: nutmeg, ginger, cinamon, the usual holiday suspects. An unremarkable beer, but demonstration of what a holiday brew should do. I found myself continually waffling on my ratings here. SubstanceT (1090), Saint Louis, Missouri, USA

Sweet creamy nose some hints of [nutmeg?] and spice. Medium body, overall not too shabby ukoolaid (572), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 4, 2003 1998: Deep brown with a moderate brown head. Smells of pine, sap, vinegar, and syrupy spices. Initially astringent and sour, with a very full body, full of pine needle flavor, and by the end of the drink it is puckering sour with woody flavors. Thick and creamy... which is odd when it suddenly transitions to a dry, woody finish. Quite similar to the 2002 and 2003, though much more thick, and with a slight buttery taste that puts it off... still good, though. Thanks Eric! carboloader (319), Houston, Texas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 3, 2003 On draught at Gingerman Houston (2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000 vintages). I tasted the 2002 and 2001. For 2002: poured a ruby amber with a tan frothy head. Little to no carbonation. Aroma is many things, including spices and some sweet malt. Flavor is delicious with nutmeg and a very earthy presence. I swear I tasted vanilla as well, but it may just have been the creamy mouth feel. Finish is long and bitter with a spicy sweetness. Definitely one of the better Christmas brews I've had. For 2001, everything was the same to me except for a more astringent flavor and aftertaste. Overall, I would come back to these repeatedly. Nice malty flavors with a nutmeg finish. The aged beer almost drank like a strong ale. Very good, if you can find it kyzr (1123), Belgrade, Montana, USA
