Commercial Description:
Our Special Ale, a dark, rich, heavily spiced ale with a recipe that changes with each passing year. - The enticing ruby color is topped by a dark creamy head that emits both malty and spicy aromas with ginger being a prominent one. 2002 Christmas Ale. Note: this bottle had been opened for 15 hours by the time i tasted it. Great apprearance, nice and dark. The flavor was piney and spicy at the same time. definately reminded me of Christmas.

2001. The flavor is dominated by clove, nutmeg, and alcohol. The color is great and the head nice and dense, but the flavors are overwhelming and competed with each other too much when fresh. Upon aging, the clove and nutmeg are still there, but a sweetness has emerged, with strong chocolate notes as well. The head is more dense and creamy and lasts as long as the beer. The alcohol is not noticable at all. The color is still a nice deep ruby, and the beer is very smooth and almost creamy on the tongue.

Bottle of the 2001 vintage. A dark cloudy brown color with a light brown laced head. A wonderful ginger and cinnamon spice in the aroma. A deep burnt malt flavor with some spice but clearly overpowered by the dark malts.

2001 version, drank in March 2003. Dark brown with a dark but quickly fading head. I smell coffee, wine, and some assorted spices. Hmm...not much flavor here. Slightly malty, slightly vinous. Nothing really stands out though.

2001 version: Very dark color, rapidly disappearing head. Aroma of roasted malts, spices, fruits. Taste is more burned malts again, with a little bacon or smokey taste. Long palate, my tongue is like an oven after this roasted stouty stuff.

- 2001 version; deep dark brown color, with hints of red – very nice aroma, spicy, hoppy, hints of pumpkin; spicy flavor, nice body, rich, hints of chocolate and fruit, somewhat bitter

2001 version in 2003. Dark brown, creamy head. Rich in taste: spicy, roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Lingering palate. Quite nice.

I had the 1999 / 25th anniversary ale today, over 3 years in the bottle and certainly the oldest American beer I have ever had. Don't try this with a Bud! Appearance is initially diasppointing ... dark copper, almost black in the glass, with the slightest bit of amber lacing. Aroma then communicates some of the complexity that will follow, with sweet dark malt and ... spruce boughs? Mouth is good, full, tannic, with a slight tingle / spritz. Complexity slowly builds, with sweet dark malt, burnt coffee, unsweetened chocolate, then spruce needles, fruit cake spicing (nutmget and clove) and a full bitter finish. Better than the 2002.
