Well, I tried the 1998, which I don’t recall liking very much. i wasn’t much of a beer nut back then, so I tried the 2001, which was just great. I love christmas spiced ales, and this one is a winner. Anchor never ever fails.

One of my favorite Christmas beers. It changes its character seemingly every year.

2001: A fairly bitter, dark and chocolatey malt-flavored brew. Complex and drinkable. Very nice and thick. It doesn’t have that much alcohol in it, but the warmth and burn might make you think it’s a high alcohol brew.

Nice dark appearance with a brown, lasting head. Sweet aroma. Malty, spicy taste, bitter in the end.

Re-Rate 09/08/02 (2001) vintage. The pour is a nice dark brown, the head is large, generous lace. Nose is caramel, floral, malt, and a tad earthy. Front is sweet, the top light, the finish is acidic, dry, hoppy, and a damn fine beer as always. ranks a decent #422 on my current 1000 beer master list.
