Dark, dark, black unless held to the light then an entrancing dark ruby color; big head that lasts and lasts. Aroma is anice and nutmeg and allspice and everything nice. This is probably my 4th or 5th different vintage Our Special, but the first I’ve rated (and on a hot early-September night, to boot). Flavor is everything I personally want in a holiday ale: very malty, spices well-integrated but pronounced (the aformentioned pungent powders, as well as a bit of cinnamon and orangepeel), and a long finish with hops finally coming into play. Beautiful, just beautiful; but what am I going to drink in December? herbjones (742), Orange, California, USA

Wow, this has mellowed beautifully.Cinnamon and nutmeg maybe even a hint of ginger in there. I’m glad I saved this one it’s just to bad it was the last one. cckevin (33), Terre Haute, Indiana, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 16, 2002 1999 from memory...take that for what it is worth...very hoppy, and had extra spices (nutmeg?). Well worth the effort I went through to get it in our local store. Drew (2409), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/20 | Aug 11, 2002 2001 - Dark ruby red. I kept thinking to myself ’How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?’, as the cloying syrupy sweetness overwhelmed all the nice nutmeg/cinnamony spicy warmth of this ale. I just not did not like this at all. fiulijn (7420), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy

Malt mouthfeel, very strong caramel (the strongest of all the beers I have ever tasted) just supported by some bitterness (not enough for me). Ordinary palate. CE619 (81), san diego, California, USA
