Commercial Description:
Our Special Ale, a dark, rich, heavily spiced ale with a recipe that changes with each passing year. - The enticing ruby color is topped by a dark creamy head that emits both malty and spicy aromas with ginger being a prominent one. The full body is matched with complex dry and spicy flavors that produce a nice favorable combination before finishing on the dry side.

2001. Dark, dark, black unless held to the light then an entrancing dark ruby color; big head that lasts and lasts. Aroma is anice and nutmeg and allspice and everything nice. This is probably my 4th or 5th different vintage Our Special, but the first I’ve rated (and on a hot early-September night, to boot). Flavor is everything I personally want in a holiday ale: very malty, spices well-integrated but pronounced (the aformentioned pungent powders, as well as a bit of cinnamon and orangepeel), and a long finish with hops finally coming into play. Beautiful, just beautiful; but what am I going to drink in December?

1997 bottling.Dark brown bordering on black. Thin head. Wonderful aroma of malt and spices. Wow, this has mellowed beautifully.Cinnamon and nutmeg maybe even a hint of ginger in there. I’m glad I saved this one it’s just to bad it was the last one.

1999 from memory...take that for what it is worth...very hoppy, and had extra spices (nutmeg?). Well worth the effort I went through to get it in our local store.

2001 - Dark ruby red. I kept thinking to myself ’How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?’, as the cloying syrupy sweetness overwhelmed all the nice nutmeg/cinnamony spicy warmth of this ale. I just not did not like this at all.

Dark amber color. Strong malt aroma, caramel. Malt mouthfeel, very strong caramel (the strongest of all the beers I have ever tasted) just supported by some bitterness (not enough for me). Ordinary palate.

1997 vintage tasted on draught at the brewery. dark brown color; nice sprucey nose. spices were overpowering to the palate. Nutmeg especially. finishes with a touch of hops. spicing needs to be toned down just a bit.

2001: The taste is dominated by a smokey hop blend. A little different, very interesting and well balanced.

Had the 2001 version of this beer...smokey aroma, interesting smokey hop taste, crisp, came together well.
