Commercial Description:
Our Special Ale, a dark, rich, heavily spiced ale with a recipe that changes with each passing year. - The enticing ruby color is topped by a dark creamy head that emits both malty and spicy aromas with ginger being a prominent one. 1999 12 oz. bottle via trade with IrishBoy To be honest, this was my least favorite of the OSA beers I’ve had. It basicly taste and smells like the others. This one had some oxidation. I’m just not a big fan. Thanks Richard for sending this one awhile back.

So I walk into a liquor store off of Highway 80 in Contra Costa County just to see what kind of beer selection they have (mainly Anhesier lager crap & Mexican urine), I notice a small selection of Anchor & Sierra Nevada six packs. One catches my eye because it’s the only sixer which is not full. I do a double take when I see the palm tree on the cardboard holder and read the year, "2001," on the label. The cardboard is water saturated and fraying, but inside sit 4 bottles of 2001 Special Ale. Can it be? BTW, a lovely, slightly sweet brew with lots of deep coffee flavored roasted malts, pine woodiness and mellowed, but quite apparent, hops. Great head & milder carbonation than more recent of these brews. Awesome!

2000 vintage - Easily my 2nd favorite vintage of the 6 we tried. The aroma had the same classic OSA holiday spice, but there seemed to be spruce needles in the mix which gave it a nice earthy, piney character. I could also pick up some distinct tea characteristics too. Flavors had the spicy combo but there was some nice chocolate hints too which was a welcomed addition. Some light coffee notes were detected (strangely enough). Good stuff for being 7+ years old."

2000 bottling from the cellar. Mahogany hue with a decent tan head. Strong smell of burnt caramel, orange peel, cloves. Medium bodied with light carbonation. A slight oxidized smell does not detract. Earthy, woody, lightly toasted malt taste with spice flavors that echo the smell. A smooth, subtle malt beverage here.2004

Pours a thick, creamy tan head. After the head settles, a dark chocolate/coffee color manifests. Smells of nutmeg/alspice and more or less like Christmas. Has a slight roasted flavor as well.

Black opaque pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, raisins, dried fruit, allspice and gingerbread. Ginger, chocolate, and coffee flavors. More bitter than anything else. Not well balanced. Thin mouth feel.
