Complex aroma and flavor but I'm not sure what I'm drinking since none of the flavors is very pronounced. Maybe complex is the wrong word and muddled would be better? Dry malt, sweet spice (nutmeg?), some fruit, some hop. Chalky tannin in the mouth, like a big California cabernet. Just had the best winter stout ever the day before, so I'm trying to be fair to this one. It's a good winter beer, a little better than Sam Smith's Winter Welcome but certainly not on a par with a Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout or a Victory Storm King Stout for an interesting sipping beer. This is the 2002 vintage, so maybe I should let it sit in the basement for a year till next winter? Murph06 (121), Illinois, USA

Maybe my batch was labled wrong but no hint of any spices AT ALL in my beers. I was disappointed but when reviewed as a "regular" year-round product I think it's well done. Roasted malt, coffeish, and slight date/raisin hints. bluemeow76 (693), Lewis Center, Ohio, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 29, 2003 A very dark ale. Deep, dark brown with a tan head that is rapidly diminishing. This is a very spicy beer. Hints of dark chocolate. While spicy, this beer goes down smooth. I look forward to next years. leitrim65 (398), Seattle, Washington, USA

Coffee continues to be present when tasted with a long slightly bitter finish. Dogbrick (2907), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 21, 2003 Courtesy of the Hollingshead Deli in Orange, CA. I liked this one a little less than the 2001 version, which I tried yesterday. I'm not sure if it is because the recipe is different, or because the 2001 version had some time to mellow out. This one just seemed more rough around the edges. Pours a nice dark ruby/brown with a medium thick and lasting beige head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is nicely spiced and heavy on the nutmeg. Flavor is seriously spiced, mostly ginger and nutmeg, and a little cinnamon. Had a sweet finish that kind of reminded me of a flat cola. Overall this was decent but a little too much spice. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 20, 2003 Dark chestnut color with a small beige head. Spice in the aroma include ginger, nutmeg, allspice and spruce. Much better than the last couple of years. Sweet dark malts coat the mouth. Some what dry and bitter in the finish. Brings back memories of earlier versions without a juniper kick. jeffin7 (610), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA
