Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

Wonderful deep brown with a solid inch of bright beige head that was slow to settle. Has a clean sweet smell with tastes of vanilla, cinnamon and roasted nuts. Aftertaste seemed to be of liquorice and a faint memory of nutmeg, which lingers in a good way. Had the odd good fortune of finding a 6 pack of this in January of 2006 and I’m enjoying one of my last tonight. Tastes just as good as when I had it in ’o4, which I wasn’t really expecting.

via trade with IrishBoy - Pours a brown color with a faint tan head. Has a nutmeg aroma. Has a spicey caramel malt flavor. Light to medium body. A good beer. Thanks Richard.

Bottled. (2004 vintage) Reddish-brown, clear and without carbonation. Tan head. Sweet aroma with lightly roasted notes, hints of cellar and alcohol. The flavor has cellar, spices and sweetness. Thin body. Spicy, lightly hopped and sweet finish. (060801)

Bottle. Nice and malty, powerful aroma. Seems a bit more powerful than the 2005 version. Nice dark brown colour, red shine. Leaves lace. The flavour is nice and malty, dusty. Roasted aftertaste. Seems a bit more rounded and nice than 2005, perhaps because of the extra time in the bottle.

Opaque brown w/ large brown head. Good lace. Playful, perfumy aroma of ginger, nutmeg, pine & spruce. Full-bodied, spritzy feel. Complex, spicy, malty flavour--sweet notes of caramel & chocolate balanced by ginger, nutmeg & pine.

From 12oz Bottle. Deep brown murky pour with a finger of beige head that quickly reduces to a thin oily film. Aromas of vanilla laffy taffy, freshly shaved nutmeg, and cinnimon spice instantly permeate my nostrils. Some additional fruity scents of plums and butternut squash also seem to be coming through. Medium bodied, toasted wheat bread flavors with some dry mocha malt and a fresh bite of raisiny banana bread. Some sticky light chocolate noticable as well. The finish brings out some phenolic banana flavors and some yeasty, bready tones. Quite interesting and preferred over the 2005 vintage when tasted side-by-side.
