Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

A strange find this weekend, some Christmas in July I guess. A dark brown color with a hint of red and a beige head. The aroma is loads of ginger, cinammon, and nutmeg. The flavor is somewhat sour with a heavy holiday spice rack in there. The body is a little thin. I enjoyed it.

Very dark beer, brown that is damn near wanting to be black. The head is a very sandy dirty white color. the aroma is much like face planting on some dirt, dirt that has only a few threads of grass in it. this has a barleywine feel to it up front and then becomes very smooth, damn fine, beer damn fine.

Tastes like fruitcake liquified. Very drinkable though. I sat out in the cold sipping this and listening to the water and I have to say it was a sort of cosmic moment. It definitely put me in the X-mas spirit. All the good sweets of X-mas are present like sugar plums, all spice, cinnamon, dates, molassses and even a hint of rum.

Poured a dark auburn/ebony color with a creamy finger of tan head. The nose was complex with chocolate malt, caramel, molassesand and plum. The taste starts with chocolate and burnt malt, then transition to a strong raisiny/prune middle. Sweet caramel seeps in at the end. Hops take over in the finish drying the bitter chocolate, prune and expresso notes. The feel was nice and full. This was my first OSA, and I had great expectations for it. For me the overpowering prune notes turned me off. This was a good holiday ale, not great by any means. I’m interested to see what it’s like next year.

12 oz bottle - about 6 months old. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. It has a creamy brown head that goes to a fine film.

The aroma is nutmeg and ginger with a little chocolate, clove, pine trees, and cinnamon. There is a little cardboard as it warms. I love the spicy aroma of these beers!

The flavor is mostly roasty malts, slightly sweet. The spiciness is rather subdued, and there’s a little acidity. It has a bitter and spicy (nutmeg, ginger, clove) finish. It has a very smooth and creamy palate.

Overall, I really like this beer. It seemed pretty similar to last years - maybe a littlle hoppier and a little more acidic.

My first experience with this beer. Wonderful. Christmas in a bottle. Spicy, full of roasty flavors, hint of cinnamon and other things i can’t quite put my finger on. Great and good.

Spicy, crisp smell with lots of cinnamon in it. Darker pour than I expected. Not too terribly noteworthy. Complex spice flavor, but not a great malt. Underhopped.
